#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2026-12-01

Hello my darling tutu lovers! It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast and history buff. This week we're jetting back in time, ahem, well, more like riding the Eurostar to France for this Tutu Tuesday, for the ultimate history of the tutu!

Today, December 1st, 2026, finds us on a rather crisp French winter's morning, standing outside the Palais Garnier in Paris. Ooh la la! Can you feel the excitement in the air? A little history first…

You know I love a bit of fashion history. That’s why I’m starting today’s #TutuTuesday with a blast from the past, specifically, the late 18th century.

Now, tutus were, for a very long time, simply not a thing! Ballet dancers in the days of the Marie Antoinette era used to perform in robes à la française. Think elegant gowns with hoop skirts, full of ruffles, lots of velvet, and lavish embellishments. Imagine performing complex movements in all that fabric! You’d need the strength of five ballerinas just to stand!

But then came Marie Taglioni. Now, this phenomenal Italian dancer took the world by storm. She danced in a white, airy, short skirt – the start of the “Romantic tutu,” and the beginning of our fabulous tutu story.

The Romantic tutu was a huge revolution, a departure from the old heavy robes, allowing for leaps, jumps, and graceful movements we’ve all grown to adore.

For me, this change epitomises the brilliance of dance – a way to celebrate human expression and a rejection of limitations. We’ve come a long way from the restricted days of big hoops and cumbersome gowns. I bet that Marie Taglioni had a twinkle in her eye as she twirled away in that lightweight garment. It's all about freeing ourselves up and being expressive, and the tutu is an iconic symbol of that!

Time continues to turn and we find ourselves waltzing forward into the 1840s – think Degas' paintings! By this time, the tutu had started its exciting transformation – think shorter, more flowing skirts – designed for greater fluidity of movement and breathtaking elegance. I’ve always thought the Degas paintings capture the grace of a tutu better than almost anything.

But it’s the “classical tutu” that's going to give me the most exciting chills today – a symbol of power, strength, and utter feminine charm. Remember this is when women began to truly step into the limelight, seeking new and exhilarating freedom of movement – that’s the beauty of dance!

And with the arrival of the “bell skirt,” designed to give more control for fast-paced sequences, the ballerina truly became the reigning queen of the stage.

The "bell skirt" was popular in the late 1800s. Now, this is when en pointe dancing, which, for those of you not in the know, is basically dancing on the tips of your toes, took off! Can you imagine? I’m on my tiptoes just thinking about it!

Can we please give a round of applause for the magnificent Carlotta Grisi, who is one of my favourite pioneers of the "bell skirt". Can we imagine dancing without a strong "bell skirt" like the classical tutu to manage and execute our steps perfectly?! A true legend.

I like to call the "bell skirt" a must-have accessory in your ballerina wardrobe – a crucial element for the dancer. I'm not sure I’d have managed to even put on a pointe shoe if the "bell skirt" hadn’t arrived on the scene – it really holds you in place. A modern tutu lover like me is incredibly grateful for this fabulous piece of garment history.

Now fast-forward, to today, 2026. Oh, the times they are a-changin’ – for ballet and the tutu. Tutu evolution is no longer only about dancing – it's about creativity, expression, and even a statement of confidence. A true fashion icon that’s here to stay.

Tutus have transformed beyond the stage! You see, dancers of all abilities wear tutus in different forms, on the streets, in everyday life. That’s how fashion history is made! That’s how trends are born!

Remember the balletcore trend, oh darling! It's still hugely popular now, all thanks to ballet fashion. We see a fashion statement for every mood and every occasion, including ballet flats, tulle dresses, satin ribbon adornments, and lots of pale pink. That's what's great about the ballet core trend, – it's truly versatile. I think every ballerina lover should own some ballet flats, darling – they're a fashionable way to look graceful and effortlessly chic.

These days, ballet companies aren’t the only ones redefining the tutu. It's not about just sticking to tradition - there’s been a shift, an incredible change, for everyone to design and create a modern version. This is about showcasing artistic individuality. It's a testament to fashion creativity, to self-expression. It's a testament to embracing one's self - **Tutus are no longer confined to ballet - they are truly a global fashion statement! You go girls! Let's see your confidence bloom and show everyone you know how to be the absolute epitome of a fashionista!

We’ve seen tutus come alive on this glorious day at the Palais Garnier, darling! The “Le Corsaire” ballet performance in this majestic venue! Imagine this: it’s not your average, standard "bell skirt", it’s all about a lavish, beautiful, and colourful version.

I'm just utterly smitten with “Le Corsaire" , a romantic tale of adventure, love and pirates! Now this story and these beautiful sets always manage to mesmerize me, and of course, those absolutely iconic, exquisite black tutus with a burst of glorious colour. This performance truly sparkles with the finest tutus you'll see. Every stitch, every swirl is just a feast for the eyes.

My day isn’t over though - it's Shopping Time! and that means the “Galeries Lafayette". Oh! Do we love those beautiful silk and satin pieces! Now I think you know I have to give you the “look of the day"– a beautiful satin blouse and of course, you know, my beautiful pink tulle skirt with floral accents, perfect for the festive season!
