Hello darlings! It's Emma, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, here with another instalment of TutuTuesday, dedicated to the fascinating history of our beloved ballet tutu! I'm writing this from a quaint little café in the heart of Paris - I just adore the Parisian chic! Today is 8th December 2026, and you know what that means... drumroll The ballet world is abuzz with excitement for the opening night of "La Bayadère" at the Palais Garnier! Can you believe it's been almost 200 years since this iconic ballet debuted? I'm going to see it myself, and I just cannot wait!
Today, we're going to journey back to the 19th century to delve into the evolution of the romantic tutu. Picture it: the late 1800s, the era of Marie Taglioni and Carlotta Grisi, two of the most famous ballerinas of the Romantic era. This period was a turning point in the history of the ballet tutu, shifting away from the full-skirted and rather cumbersome tutus of the earlier days. Think layers and layers of petticoats!
But things were about to change...
Enter Marie Taglioni. This iconic ballerina is famous for her groundbreaking role as La Sylphide, and it's said she helped popularize the romantic tutu that became synonymous with this period. It wasn't just about the appearance – the lighter tutu freed the dancers, allowing for grace and fluidity of movement, a characteristic of the romantic ballet. This romantic tutu was a masterpiece in itself – a shorter, almost knee-length, delicate tutu made from several layers of tulle. Gone were the heavy fabrics and the constricted form of the earlier days; the new tutu embraced the beauty of a dancer's lines, their lithe and graceful movements. It’s a testament to the evolving role of dance itself. It's no surprise that the Romantic tutu became synonymous with the Romantic Era of ballet!
Just imagine: Imagine seeing Marie Taglioni swirling across the stage in a cloud of tulle, light as a feather, captivating audiences with her ethereal movements! Isn't it fascinating to imagine the impact she made? You can feel it, right? The energy and movement, the expression, the evolution of this iconic garment and how it intertwined with the changing dance form!
And of course, we can't forget the magnificent Carlotta Grisi. You're going to find it interesting that while Taglioni's La Sylphide solidified the image of the romantic tutu, Grisi embraced the tutu's potential for creating fantastical and dreamlike effects in her own performances, like "Giselle" where she donned a simple, knee-length, romantic tutu – beautiful and ethereal!

Speaking of enchantment, the colour palette of the Romantic era deserves a little shoutout. White was the colour of the period – the color of innocence and purity. Think of white tulle, flowing in the light, as ballerinas performed on the stage, a delicate dance of pure beauty. What's not to love? It is utterly dreamy, wouldn’t you say?
Speaking of dreaminess, did I mention my Paris trip? Oh my, the shops! It’s a tutu lover's paradise here. From the iconic Maison Repetto with its impeccable handmade shoes and tutus to the elegant Parisian boutiques bursting with delicate lace and ethereal fabrics, every corner of the city is filled with a captivating sense of Parisian fashion. It’s making my own pink tutu heart beat a little faster!

I am going to have a ballet shoes marathon all night! You could wear them with your pink tutu as a sweet and elegant ensemble or simply wear them around the house for an extra touch of ballerina chic!
Tutu Tuesday Shopping Tip: Whenever you're shopping for the perfect ballerina ensemble, look for pieces that are soft, lightweight, and that embrace your natural movements, allowing you to dance freely and express your inner ballerina!
