Hiya lovelies! Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, ready to take you on another thrilling journey through the enchanting history of the ballet tutu!
It's #TutuTuesday, and this week we're going right back to the heart of the story! Think Victorian elegance, sweeping gowns, and a touch of revolutionary spirit - because believe it or not, the very first ballet tutus were actually quite the daring statement.
I know, I know, you're probably picturing all those gorgeous, frilly tutus we see on stage these days - the kind you could practically pirouette in for hours! But the very first tutus? They weren't actually meant for dancing at all!
Think about it - those long, billowing skirts worn by ballerinas in the 1700s and 1800s would be a bit of a hindrance when it came to leaping and spinning, don't you think? But, don't get me wrong - the outfits back then were positively breathtaking! Think opulent fabrics, rich embellishments, and lots and lots of layers! They looked simply stunning, especially when illuminated by candlelight.
So, how did we get from those elegant gowns to the short, airy tutus we see today? Well, it was all about freedom of movement. The legendary ballerina Marie Taglioni was a big inspiration! She wanted to move more freely onstage - to fly across the stage like a feather on the breeze! She took inspiration from Greek statues, creating a sort of "ballet dress" - it wasn't actually a "tutu" yet, but it was a key stepping stone in our tutu journey!
And then came the revolutionary Marie Taglioni’s 1832 performance of La Sylphide! Dressed in a simple, short, white dress that could allow for freer movement, Marie shocked audiences across the globe! This “ballet dress”, designed by Eugène Lami, paved the way for our tutu - a beautiful revolution in dance wear!
It was actually the French dancer, Fanny Elssler, who took the concept of Taglioni's "ballet dress" and pushed it further, creating a real "tutu" by shortening it and making it even more streamlined! She called it a "tulle" (it was named after the fine mesh fabric it was made of!), which eventually got shortened to “tutu”!
Just imagine those revolutionary steps back then, leading to the magical, beautiful tutu we know and love today! Talk about a timeless and elegant piece of clothing - a true symbol of beauty and grace!
Now, it’s 2027, and you can wear tutus all year round – they've become such a powerful statement of femininity, individuality, and joy.
Of course, tutus come in every colour and style imaginable - just like a ballet performance! My personal favourite? You already know - pink, of course! Think flowing skirts and delicate ribbons! I even have a pink tutu dress with sequined detailing – just divine!
And on that note, I've got a few shows to catch in the Big Apple – Broadway, you know – where they've been absolutely obsessed with tutus this year! Think extravagant costume designs, jaw-dropping choreography and oh, the sequins!
There’s a wonderful new show with tutus galore! It's a real whirlwind of a performance with all the grace and elegance of classic ballet mixed with an urban flair and sassy modern twists! Can’t wait to see it! It's all thanks to a young and fearless ballet troupe taking New York by storm. They've reimagined the way we see ballet with exciting choreographies, cutting-edge costumes and mind-blowing routines – even incorporating street dance!
If you haven't caught a ballet show in a while, make sure to add it to your calendar - there’s nothing quite like the energy of a live ballet performance, and those dazzling tutus truly are the perfect accompaniment! I have a feeling 2027 will see even more people embrace tutus, spreading the magic of the art of dance through all kinds of performances!
I've got a couple of new tutus coming my way too. One's in a gorgeous cerulean blue – almost like a sky full of stars – and the other's an emerald green with dazzling silver trim - oh so dazzling, and perfect for twirling on a winter day! I simply couldn't resist!
So remember, darling, be bold, be daring, and twirl like nobody’s watching. After all, tutue are much more than just ballet wear; they're an expression of who we are. And let's be honest - the world just looks a little brighter when everyone's sporting a pink tutu!
