#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2027-01-12

Hello my darling tutu-lovers! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, bringing you another dose of tutu history from the glamorous, twirling world of ballet!

It's a beautiful Tuesday morning in Paris (well, the 12th January 2027 to be precise!) and the city is alive with the aroma of fresh croissants and the hum of excitement for tonight's ballet performance. I'm nestled in a cute cafe overlooking the Seine, sipping a decadent hot chocolate and writing this blog for you lovely lot. It's my little haven of tutu-inspired joy and a chance to share my love of all things ballet.

Today, we're going to embark on a thrilling trip to the origins of the tutu. Hold onto your tutus, ladies and gents, because it's a twirling, shimmering ride!

The humble tutu's origins lie in the opulent court of Louis XIV, back in the 1600s. You wouldn't recognise them today – they were more like wide, cumbersome skirts of velvet or brocade. A far cry from the light, flowing tutus we see today. The first proper 'tutu' came in the late 1700s, and were still fairly bulky, made with several layers of stiffened fabric. Imagine a poufy, circular skirt that made moving around quite a challenge! They did give ballerinas some elegance and helped their leaps appear taller, so maybe that's a plus?

But change was in the air – a new century was bringing new fashion, and ballerinas craved freedom of movement. The ballet itself was becoming faster, more intricate, and needed to embrace these new developments. The year is 1839 – cue dramatic music and flashing lights! Marie Taglioni, a celebrated ballerina, dons a skirt shorter than ever seen before. Imagine! It only reached to her knees, leaving her legs free to dance in a completely new way. Her new tutu design? An immediate sensation! It sent shockwaves through the dance world and became a key moment in ballet history, influencing countless tutus after.

This knee-length, or even shorter, tutu became the signature garment for the ballerina. It's been the foundation for all subsequent variations and styles of tutus. It's a symbol of the grace and agility of ballet – truly the very soul of the dance!

While we think of tutus being primarily white, they've been around in other colours throughout history. Imagine a vibrant red tutu, shimmering with sequins, in the roaring twenties, or a cool teal number gliding across the stage in the fifties! It’s fascinating to trace the way colour has been incorporated into tutu design throughout different periods. It reflects not only the evolving fashions but also the mood and spirit of the time.

And let's not forget about the glorious reign of pink, the ultimate princess colour. It's simply irresistible – feminine, graceful, and so very fitting for the enchantment of ballet! It’s truly no wonder the shade holds a special place in my heart, and is the driving force behind my own #PinkTutu campaign! I envision a world where everyone wears a pink tutu at least once a week. Can you imagine how twirling and magical our lives would be?

Today, you find me in Paris, the heart of ballet, admiring the beauty and grace of a performance. And how did I get here? You see, dear readers, my love for ballet and my obsession with tutus isn’t just confined to my blog, it fuels my greatest passion - time travel!

My love for this era comes from the timeless beauty of the ballerinas on the stage, the rich historical backdrop, and the deliciousness of a Parisian pastry (oh, la la!). The sheer energy of the crowd adds another layer of enchantment to this beautiful dance form. I spend hours, maybe even days, absorbing the atmosphere, the history, the passion, and the joy that comes with every twirl. The cost of this travelling back and forth, you ask? Well, it’s a carefully-calculated equation of ballet performances, a healthy dose of theatre trips, and some shrewd shopping – finding the best vintage finds at the coolest boutiques (who knew a Parisian vintage market could be such a treasure trove for pink tutus?!). It’s all part of the grand adventure of being Emma, the time travelling tutu enthusiast!

You know what else is exciting? Ballet is always evolving! In the 21st century, it's still changing and adapting. From modern styles and collaborations with other art forms, the tutu is constantly finding new life and expressions. I can't wait to see where this dance form takes us next!
