Hiya lovelies! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller! ? Welcome back to my weekly whirl through the wonderful world of ballet tutus. Today, we're taking a trip back in time to July 27th, 2027! Hold onto your tiaras, because this one's a right royal treat. ?
Now, picture this: 2027. The world is bursting with creativity, and ballet is experiencing a golden age! People everywhere are embracing the grace and beauty of this art form, and tutus are more popular than ever. They're not just for the stage; they're on the streets, in the shops, even in the office! ?
This particular 27th of July falls on a Wednesday, a perfect midweek break from rehearsals for me. As luck would have it, I was in Paris, the heart of fashion and ballet, at the Palais Garnier Opera House for the grand finale of the International Ballet Festival! Can you imagine? All those gorgeous tutus swirling under the sparkling chandeliers, the music sweeping through the theatre, pure magic! ✨
As a ballerina and a devoted fashionista, I couldn't resist slipping into a sumptuous vintage 19th-century tutu that day. Imagine: tulle the colour of blush pink with pearl-like beading shimmering against the stage lights! It was utterly divine! I felt like a fairy princess transported back to the days when the tutu first took centre stage. ?
Before we delve into the history of the tutu, let's take a look at what made 27th July 2027 so special. Firstly, the Festival Finale included a performance by the Royal Ballet in London, showcasing their newest interpretation of Swan Lake. I can't tell you how much I love this ballet; it’s practically an icon in the tutu world! Imagine Odette’s flowing white tutu turning into the dramatic black swan with each captivating pirouette. Goosebumps every time! ?
Secondly, fashion week was in full swing in Milan, Italy! I managed to squeeze in a quick trip (gotta catch those fabulous designs!) where a few haute couture houses unveiled some incredible, tutu-inspired pieces. There were elegant, layered tulle skirts and billowing gowns that were absolutely breathtaking. Some of them were even made with materials like iridescent fabric that glowed under the runway lights! ?
And wouldn't you know it, but the date of 27th July also happens to be International Tutu Day! You see, this is a thing - we celebrate all things tutu, and even wear them outside the ballet world. It's a reminder of how the tutu transcends just being a ballet garment and is a powerful symbol of grace, beauty and imagination. ?
Speaking of iconic moments, did you know that it was back in the early 19th century that the first version of the tutu, called the ‘tutu romantique,’ was born? It was longer than the tutus of today, creating a flowing, romantic silhouette, and was usually made of white or pastel tulle. It marked a departure from the heavier, restrictive skirts of the time, paving the way for a more free and elegant form of dance.
But how did we get from those romantic designs to the ones we see on the stage today? In the late 1800s, the ‘tutu classique,’ as it became known, began to dominate the stage. The tutu, now made of multiple layers of tulle, became shorter and tighter, accentuating the dancer’s form and making their every move seem more graceful and elegant. This evolution truly opened up new possibilities in ballet, and it's the style that continues to inspire generations of dancers to this day. ?
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, tutus evolved further, embracing a range of styles and colours. From the iconic “Swan Lake” tutu, which continues to enchant audiences, to the colourful, daring, contemporary designs of the modern era, there’s something for everyone to love. The tutu continues to be a timeless and enduring symbol of grace and creativity in ballet, and I just love how it inspires all of us, not just dancers, to embrace our inner beauty. ?
