#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2027-07-20

Hello, my darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, back with another dive into the history of ballet's most fabulous fashion staple - the tutu!

Today, as the 20th of July, 2027, shimmers on the horizon, I'm feeling especially twirly and excited to take you all on a little time-traveling adventure through the world of the tutu. Imagine me, your trusty tutu guide, hopping into my magical time-traveling carriage, pulled by a team of graceful greyhounds (my preferred mode of transportation - think of it like a posh version of a horse and cart!), and taking you back to the beginning of it all...

(Just imagine the carriage gliding through a world of glittering gaslight and bustling city streets as I whisk you through time!)

The first whispers of the tutu appeared during the Romantic era in ballet. Picture swirling skirts and fluttering fabric. Back then, ballet was still taking its baby steps - literally. It was a time for grand gestures, long, flowing costumes and elaborate performances. Dancers of the time, like Marie Taglioni (my all-time favourite! Seriously, she was the epitome of elegance!), were literally held back by their weighty costumes, requiring considerable strength and stamina. Enter the Romantic tutu - light, airy and just begging for a graceful twirl. It revolutionised the world of ballet! Gone were the heavy, floor-sweeping gowns that made dancing a cumbersome task. Instead, dancers could now flit across the stage with newfound freedom and grace!

(Imagine, darlings, the gasps of the audience as they saw Taglioni floating on pointe for the first time! I'd be swooning, that's for sure.)

As the Romantic era came to a close, ballet moved towards the classic and the dramatic. Enter the Classical tutu, with its shorter skirt and longer bodice, that we're familiar with today. It's a staple of ballet history, with variations popping up through the years. Remember "La Sylphide," with its ethereal white tutu? It's an iconic masterpiece that continues to enthrall audiences.

(Imagine the scene, the lights dim, the music swells, the ballerina in her white tutu rises effortlessly into a flawless arabesque! Sheer magic, darling!)

Fast-forward a few decades and the 'modern' tutu took the stage. No longer solely a symbol of the classics, the tutu became a chameleon, embracing all forms of dance. The 20th century saw the tutu evolving with the changing landscape of dance itself, becoming bolder and more experimental. Think Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake," with its dramatic, black tutu, the fluffy 'cake tutu' popular during the mid-20th century, and the more casual, minimalist tutus you'll find in modern contemporary dance.

Today, the tutu continues to flourish. It's no longer just a staple of the theatre - you'll find it inspiring designers and fashion houses, inspiring street wear and influencing trends. Honestly, tutus are just the best for making any occasion a bit more whimsical! It's no wonder the pink tutu has become such a celebrated emblem. Pink signifies happiness, playfulness and beauty, so it's only natural that we love to dress up in it for every occasion. A birthday? Why not wear a pink tutu to a party?! Want a little extra sparkle? You already know what to wear!

Here in London, the world of ballet is bursting with excitement! Today, we're all aflutter about a big event, darling - "A Night of Ballet Glamour!" At the Royal Opera House. We're looking forward to seeing some extraordinary tutus - shimmering silk, sparkling gems, and maybe even a bit of fringe, it’s a must-see for all ballet lovers. I'm making a beeline for the gift shop to snag the best new pink tutu! We’ll definitely need to celebrate this amazing night in style with a delicious, decadent tea and scones! I’ve heard they’ll have a scrumptious special - strawberry-raspberry cake with a touch of pink shimmer to match the theme. How could I resist?

I am also so excited to be planning a train trip up north! A lovely journey through the beautiful countryside - so romantic! Derbyshire awaits, a ballet-filled retreat. I will have a special photoshoot to show you all. The inspiration is the ‘tutu-ing' of a classic English country garden! Expect a dazzling ballet photo-shoot filled with whimsical charm, pastel hues and fluttering ribbons.
