#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2027-11-23

Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink-loving ballerina, Emma, here, ready to whisk you away on a Tutu Tuesday journey through time. As you all know, a trip down ballet history lane is always an absolute delight – tutus are my passion! ?

Today's date is especially exciting: November 23rd, 2027! What does this day hold, you ask? Why, a wonderful confluence of dance history and fabulous fashion! Imagine this, my lovely readers: I've just disembarked a train from Derbyshire, fresh from watching the most incredible rendition of The Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden! I’ve had a divine time in London - such fab shopping and oh my goodness, I scored a stunning pair of new pointe shoes in lilac at The Ballet Shop. You know I couldn't resist! ?

So, before we delve into our time travel escapade, let's take a moment to appreciate the absolute magic that is a ballet performance! It's not just the graceful movements, the sheer beauty of the costumes, or the captivating stories – it's a powerful form of art that takes us to another world, a world where anything is possible. ✨

And you know what makes that world even more magical? Tutús! ? The pièce de résistance, the star of the show, the iconic garment that embodies both grace and power.

So let's jump into the heart of the story. Ever since their invention in the 1840s, tutus have undergone quite the metamorphosis. Gone are the days of the rather frumpy Romantic tutu which graced the early ballet scenes. Now, the Romantic tutu with its multi-layered tulle skirts just couldn’t do what our classic tutu, the Bell shaped tutu and The Pagoda tutu do today, allowing dancers such freedom and athleticism. Can you imagine dancing leaps in the long Romantics, all those layers, oh, my darling, no way! It would be quite the fashion faux pas for today’s prima ballerinas! ?

Over time, the Bell shaped tutu, a staple on any ballerina's wardrobe today, evolved into the classic we all love. Its short skirt, sometimes just 40 layers of tulle! Imagine those fabulous shapes and lines of ‘Giselle’, ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, made possible with the sheer glamour and practicality of the bell-shaped tutu. The Bell-shaped tutu truly redefined the ballerina and their style. ?

Then came The Pagoda Tutu, which we see all the time, with it’s longer, softer tulle - think ‘La Sylphide’ or ‘La Bayadere’ – and even the slightly more casual* Romantic tutu* continues to add that bit of fairytale magic to any show.

Just this morning, I caught sight of a teenager at the train station, sporting a soft tulle skirt, an elegant crop top, and some cute sneakers – talk about fabulous! What a gorgeous statement piece, and one I believe can inspire more women to give a tutu a try! ?
