It’s your favourite pink-loving, tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another #TutuTuesday post from the depths of the history of our beloved tutu! This week I've journeyed to the glamorous city of… New York City! The energy here is electric! From the bustling streets to the grand theaters, it feels like the whole city is a stage!
You know I can't visit New York without a trip to see some Broadway shows, darling! It’s the perfect mix of glitz and glamour! I simply can't resist a bit of drama and sparkle, and Broadway has got it all! Plus, nothing says "dance-filled evening" like a shimmering, fabulous pink tutu! I mean, just imagine it - a dazzling light show reflecting on a pink tutu as a graceful ballerina spins across the stage! Magic!
Today, my little dance-lovers, we're stepping back into the world of fashion, the world of Tutus of the Future. You see, 2028 is a very exciting time in the world of fashion, especially the world of the tutu! I am thrilled to report, it's more diverse than ever!
*Now, darling, I can already feel your questions! "Emma, why is the tutu getting more diverse? * Well, as I was catching a most wonderful Broadway show (that I must mention had a glorious pink tutu-wearing lead - talk about my kinda show!) it occurred to me that we’re entering an era of celebration. We are seeing a lot more emphasis on body positivity, individuality, and, most importantly for us, different body shapes and sizes.
And you know what? The designers of the tutu world are catching onto this and really giving it their all. I spotted a stunning tutu, inspired by traditional Indian Bharatanatyam costumes, in one shop - stunning, darling. Imagine a shimmering sari silk skirt combined with a modern, asymmetrical bodice and it really brought it home - diversity isn't just about sizes, it's about exploring the whole world of dance and fashion, in a way!
Of course, you know that when we talk about diversity we also talk about inclusivity! And tutus are definitely playing their part in making everyone feel confident, comfortable, and fabulous! We're seeing a wider range of fabrics and colours used than ever before. From oh-so-luxurious silk and satin, to breathable and comfortable sports-tech materials - a tutu for everyone, whatever your taste, your style and your budget!
As we say, 'to each their own' dear dance fans, especially when it comes to tutu styles! It’s about what makes you feel good and confident! That confidence shines through and just takes centre stage when it comes to performing, you know what I mean? After all, what better way to express yourself than in a tutu that not only looks great but also reflects your unique style!
But let's talk about this future trend... This isn't a temporary trend, my lovely lot. This is a shift, a re-imagining of what the tutu is! Think about it! The ballet world has historically been quite strict and conservative! And I say that's a bit of a pity, dear readers, a bit of a tragedy! But thankfully, this is the future and we are seeing some serious innovation and it makes my little ballerina heart beat that much faster.
Now, this might surprise some of you, but some designers are pushing boundaries and creating what I call 'Tutu Couture' ! We are not just talking a fluffy, traditional tutu on a dress anymore! Think structured pieces, modern designs, and yes... still in that glorious shade of pink! Don't forget my pink tutus I need the world to wear more pink. My goal remains: pink tutus on every person, for everyone.
The tutu's power to inspire isn't lost on us, and designers are getting it, they really are. This year at the very biggest dance festivals in New York, you'll find the classic and traditional tutus sitting alongside these groundbreaking and futuristic tutus - and we're not talking tiny tutus either. These futuristic designs are just as grand, maybe even more dramatic than the ones we're used to! Think sharp lines, unusual shapes - there's even talk of light up designs, like you've seen in a Broadway musical! Imagine that - a real life Disney dream! But of course, there are some fantastic smaller tutu designs being released, making tutus accessible to even more dancers! This shift toward greater inclusivity really opens the door to all of us!
Speaking of the accessibility of tutus and our fabulous dance community, a major factor in the growth and future of tutu designs has to do with the fact that more people want to learn about ballet. It's such a wonderful and expressive art! There's an interest in ballet beyond the stage and the classroom. People want to learn more about it. They want to explore its traditions, its artistry, and the magic of moving to the music. I think, that means the demand for ballet supplies, ballet clothing, and of course tutues will only grow, just like our love for this beautiful form of dance!
But, I say - why just be inspired by ballet, darlings? We need to bring a bit of ballet's creativity into the world. We all need a little tutu in our lives! So here are some tips for adding that Tutu magic to your world:
- Embrace the tutu as a statement piece: For a fun event, try a pink tutu over your outfit! We’re getting back to that fun in our lives, darlings. I always encourage people to think 'out of the box' and have a good time.
- Don't be afraid to mix it up: Try wearing your tutu with an oversized t-shirt, a bold blazer, or even jeans for an effortlessly chic look!
Think beyond the stage: Let your tutu add a spark to a unique occasion, from birthday celebrations to the prom or even a day out. Who says a tutu can’t be your favourite piece for a picnic in the park?! That's my personal tip for adding some magic into your daily life!
