As a dedicated ballet devotee with a weakness for frills and a penchant for the colour pink, I've found my way to a very special spot in time for this week's journey.
Hold onto your tutus, darlings, because we're heading to Paris on the 23rd of May 2028! Now, I can't tell you exactly what I'm doing in Paris this week - that would be telling, wouldn't it? ? Let's just say it involves the iconic Palais Garnier (the Paris Opera House) and an exclusive sneak peek at the costumes for a new production of Giselle. It's going to be glorious, I just know it! And you can bet your best pink pointe shoes I'll be taking my little notebook and snapping some clandestine photos.
But, before I take you on my little tour through the Parisian fashion scene (can you say Haute Couture?), let's step back in time for our #TutuTuesday History Lesson.
A Tutu-ful Timeline:
Did you know, darlings, that tutus haven't always been the fluffy, glamorous garments they are today? In fact, the earliest form of what we'd recognise as a tutu was called a tutu à la hongroise. It was designed in the late 1800s for a very particular purpose - to really show off those long legs in ballet! You could imagine the dancers looking a bit like modern-day figure-skaters with this style.
As the years progressed, tutus evolved into different shapes and sizes, from the tutu à la basque, which was fitted around the hips, to the tutu romantique that graced the ballet world in the mid 1800s with a flowing and ethereal look.
Think about it! Imagine those dramatic, graceful movements made even more beautiful with billowing fabrics and tiers of tulle. The effect is simply magical!
Of course, we can't forget the legendary tutu classique! These iconic tutus are instantly recognisable thanks to their wide, full, and perfectly shaped tulle layers that flow and spin like a beautiful ballet dream. Think Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and all those other classics!
This history of the tutu isn't just about fashion; it reflects a journey of movement, artistry, and femininity. We can see this reflected in our tutus today - with contemporary choreographers pushing the boundaries, we've witnessed tutus evolve further.
Today, in 2028, tutus are not just a symbol of classic ballet. They’re found in various art forms: on runways for haute couture, gracing the stage for Broadway musicals, and adding an element of whimsy to pop music performances!
This year alone, I've been swept away by a breathtaking production of The Nutcracker in New York (that sugar plum fairy tutu was simply divine), and I had a blast catching a pop concert in Tokyo where the dancers wore sparkly tutus that were literally glowing. They even had mini versions for the audience to wear, too!
But, it doesn’t end there! We're now witnessing the "ballet tutu" influencing the way we think about our everyday wardrobes. Think about all the layers of tulle, silk and feathers – just the way they fall and float in the air... Isn’t it the essence of femininity?
