Today, we're taking a trip back in time to explore the history of the ballet tutu, those gloriously graceful garments that have captured hearts and graced stages for centuries.

I've found a fantastic new pink gingham checked tutu skirt in Paris that is perfect for a historical voyage – and believe me, it was a hard one to choose from!
The Romantic Era:
It’s Tuesday, 30th May 2028 – and trust me, things are buzzing around here! The air is electric with anticipation – tonight is the premiere of ‘Giselle’ in Paris, darling! A real treat! The Parisian ballet scene is absolutely humming with excitement – and believe me, it’s absolutely positively dripping with beautiful tutus!
Let’s go back to the Romantic era. Now, think: delicate, ethereal, feminine. That's the spirit of the ballet tutu in those early days. Imagine graceful dancers in white tulle, just floating across the stage. It was the perfect visual symbol of all things pure and angelic. Think Maria Taglioni! That famous dance in "La Sylphide" when she floated on pointe? Talk about tutu perfection! Those first tutus, they were so much about romanticism, about dreamy tales. It's not all frills, though. It’s said that these first ballerina tutus – or "tutus" as they weren’t called then, but were often referred to as "tulle" - allowed for a more expressive movement. Talk about a revolutionary fashion idea – ballet fashion had arrived!
The Era of the Classical Tutu:
But tutus had a more classical side as well – think Marie Taglioni! It was in the mid-1800s, in the wake of those first romantic ballerinas that those early styles morphed into the tutus we see today: the classical tutu. These tutus – they have more volume. That shape: they have this magnificent shape - wider at the hips and fitted to the legs - what's not to love? Think tutu perfection. Think Swan Lake, The Nutcracker. These tutus are the foundation of the ballerina’s silhouette, providing both shape and dramatic form.

Now, the tutu today is much more than just an elaborate costume – it's a piece of fashion art. The beauty and craftsmanship that goes into the making of these incredible garments - it’s phenomenal! Designers make it modern with funky fabrics and colors and everything – those short little skirts, they make the tutu bold and modern, oh it’s so exciting.
Tutu designers these days, they put in such artistry into their craft, that every time I watch a ballet, I’m lost in admiration at their skills. I know you’ll be feeling the same when you next see a ballerina take to the stage!
