#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2028-09-26

Hey darlings! It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-wearing time-traveling fashionista, and today we're embarking on a sartorial adventure through the centuries with none other than the star of the show... the tutu!

Oh, you didn't know I travel through time? It's true, darling! My little secret - I fund my excursions with my passion for ballet. Performances, shows, a little shopping for vintage finds... it's all in the name of tutus! This week I found myself back in the 20th century, a fascinating era for this fabulous garment. So grab a cuppa, put on your fanciest pair of ballet shoes (I'm rocking a pair of sparkly pink ones, naturally), and join me as we waltz through the captivating history of the tutu.

The humble tutu may seem like a modern invention, but its roots are far more ancient, going all the way back to... wait for it... ancient Rome! That's right, darlings, ladies in those times sported long, flowing skirts, and these could be seen as the early ancestors of our beloved tutu. Fast forward a few centuries, and by the 16th century, ballet was slowly blossoming in Italy. Crinolines took over, voluminous skirts of starched fabric which added elegance to the dancers' movements. It wasn't until the 19th century, thanks to the genius of Marie Taglioni, a legendary ballerina, that the romantic tutu, or "tutu romantique," truly took centre stage. It was shorter, lighter, and more free-flowing, highlighting the grace and athleticism of the dancers. This ushered in a golden era for the tutu, transforming it from a mere accessory to an essential element of the ballet world.

Fast forward to the 1940s and we see longer tutus return, like the beautiful, elegant skirts of classical ballet. George Balanchine, a revolutionary choreographer, introduced the "ballet flat" style - shorter, emphasizing movement and showcasing the legs in a modern, streamlined way. And wouldn't you know it, this became incredibly popular in the 1950s and 1960s, with tutus featuring on countless ballet stages and inspiring the style of other dance forms.

The 1970s witnessed a bold experiment with the tutu. Ballet artists started experimenting with colour and fabric, embracing asymmetrical styles, and incorporating various materials. From delicate silk to vibrant velvet, the tutu underwent a glamorous makeover, becoming a canvas for creativity.

And in our very own 21st century, the tutu is a true testament to the evolving dance scene. It's more versatile, embracing modern trends and expressing a vast array of creative interpretations. Designers use different fabrics, embellishments, and patterns to craft tutus for contemporary, neoclassical, and even urban street-dance styles. And wouldn't you know, street fashion is embracing this lovely garment too! I recently saw a young woman rocking a gorgeous pink tutu with a black leather jacket... absolutely divine!

You all know my obsession with pink! So of course, I had to talk about the significance of pink tutus! These embody a youthful and joyful energy. In the 20th century, dancers frequently wore pale pink tutus under pastel coloured tulle skirts for romantic ballets. These looks remain timeless and stunning. Even today, ballet classes for children are often adorned with pink, symbolizing elegance and the gracefulness of childhood. Honestly, pink tutus are pure magic!

I just got back from my little trip to September 26th, 2028. It was absolutely magical! You wouldn't believe it but it's National Ballet Day in the UK! Imagine a whole day dedicated to ballet, oh my goodness! I joined a massive "flash mob" in London’s Trafalgar Square. Imagine dozens of dancers, both professional and amateur, in bright, playful tutus, busting moves, showing off their love for ballet, all surrounded by a vibrant audience! And let me tell you, the smiles and the energy were simply infectious!

The performance ended with a thunderous round of applause and the audience erupted with delight as they snapped pictures and shared their ballet enthusiasm. Afterwards, I ventured into Covent Garden and had the best time browsing through the vintage clothing stores. I snagged a breathtaking, beaded pink tutu - you’ve got to see it! It's simply divine! And, it’s going to be a stunning piece for my next time-travel ballet performance...
