Hello darling Tutu-lovers! It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another #TutuTuesday history post from yours truly, Emma! I'm so thrilled to be writing to you from…drumroll…Paris!
Now, this beautiful city is always a feast for the senses, but it's particularly fabulous when the Paris Opera Ballet is in full swing. Oh, the costumes! The stories! The emotion! And, of course, the tutus! Speaking of tutus…
Today, we're taking a trip back in time to January 30th, 2029 - and trust me, darling, the world of the ballet tutu is already buzzing!
You see, the early 2020s saw a resurgence of the classic tutu, much to my delight, of course! You might have thought it would just be for the stage, but I'm so pleased to say, not at all. Balletwear started influencing street fashion big time, and what better way to make a statement than with a swirling, beautiful tutu? Think Sarah Jessica Parker gracing the red carpet in a blush tulle masterpiece, or Lizzo dancing her heart out in a dramatic, rainbow tutu! This was our time to sparkle!
Now, January 30th, 2029 was a very special date indeed. On this day, Ballet Blanc held their annual "Tutu Extravaganza" - a whole day dedicated to celebrating the history and evolution of the tutu! Think workshops, parades, performances, even a "Tutu-making Masterclass"! Talk about the perfect excuse for me to travel back in time and have a wonderful time! (Oh, did I mention it involved a delicious hot chocolate and a beautifully crafted, pink macaron?)
But before I go into the event, let's have a little peek back at the story of the tutu!
The origins of this fabulous garment go way back to the Romantic ballet era of the 19th century. We have to thank the famous, or maybe infamous, Marie Taglioni! She was a daring dancer with a penchant for lightness and movement, who thought the bulky dresses of the time were restrictive. She was tired of having to awkwardly skip across the stage, so she came up with a bold idea: what if the skirt was shorter, lighter, and easier to twirl in? Et voilà, the tutu was born!
Initially, it was very simple. A mere "tulle and ribbon" design - oh so elegant, so simple, so French. Imagine it, dear reader, the tulle fluttering like wings, showcasing the grace of the dancer. Magical, isn’t it? This early style, the Romantic Tutu was pretty, soft and delicate, sometimes even falling to the dancer's knees!
But oh, how times change, and the tutu with it! Over time, dancers and costume designers were on a mission for movement, and the tutus got shorter and shorter, the fabrics stiffer, creating a silhouette that made it possible for dancers to move with even more freedom! Think about that iconic Classical Tutu, a short, frilled beauty, made with stiff tulle and boasting layers upon layers. I think I’m getting a little excited just talking about it!
As the 20th century dawned, a new style arrived: the "Tutu de Jour", designed for the day, and usually crafted with more cotton and linen than tulle. Think of it as a ballet inspired everyday look!
But the classics are still adored. Remember the breathtaking "Swan Lake"? That white Romantic tutu, shimmering like moonlight, it still makes me gasp! Oh, the graceful swans, gliding with such poise and fluidity, making the stage come alive with elegance. That's the power of the tutu, it truly has a transformative effect.
I also just have to say a word about those stunning *"Giselle"* tutus. That ethereal and graceful dress of the Romantic Era, perfect for expressing the innocence and passion of the story, still captures hearts all these years later!
But this isn't the end of the tutu story! Over time, it started appearing in all shapes and sizes. The "Pako" Tutu came about, that wonderfully architectural style! But the classics, of course, continued to be a cornerstone of ballet costumes. In fact, they went beyond the theatre! Ballet fashion started inspiring other outfits. The layered tutus we saw in the early 2000s were a fashion craze, just darling for casual outfits! You see, fashion isn't just about practicality, it's about expressing yourself!
But you’re probably dying to hear all about the “Tutu Extravaganza!” Oh, how to describe it? It was a symphony of tutus! The main attraction, the pièce de résistance, was the fashion show showcasing all the different types of tutus in history! A vibrant kaleidoscope of colours and shapes! Can you imagine! There was a Tutu Workshop where I learned all about the secrets of making them!
I picked up the most adorable tutu myself – pink, of course – it had some fabulous ribbon embellishments, perfect for the ballerina in me. Then there was a street parade full of ballerinas, swirling their way through the cobbled streets! Imagine a sea of flowing tulle, just magical! It’s not just about dancing; it's about making a statement!
The day was an exquisite ode to the history and the future of the ballet tutu. It was all about embracing those beautiful garments, both in dance and fashion, and it gave me such a boost to continue on my mission! And yes, I still dream of every single person sporting a pink tutu on some special day! Who's with me?!
