Hello lovelies! It's your favourite tutu-loving time traveller, Emma, back with another blast from the past (or, should I say, future?) for our weekly #TutuTuesday ballet tutu history journey! As a self-proclaimed pink tutu aficionado, it’s my mission to explore the wondrous history of the tutu and all its variations, and share it with you lovely lot! This week, I'm waltzing right back to 2029, where a love of tutus was just as strong as it is today - and let me tell you, the tutu trends were something else!
Before I divulge all the delicious fashion details, can we just acknowledge the fact that I’m writing this post from the train, on the way to my next grand ballet performance? This time, I'm making my way across the US, catching all the fabulous shows this beautiful country has to offer. Don't worry, you'll get a full recap of the show in a separate blog post - but trust me, the tutus were to die for!
Tutu Travels Through Time!Back in 2029, trains were still all the rage – though I have to say, the interiors of these modern train carriages felt much closer to a plush ballroom than the clunkier trains we sometimes take back in our own time. So, naturally, I decided to turn the train ride itself into a glamorous fashion display. As the sun shone through the window onto the perfectly manicured railway landscape, I twirled and pirouetted my way through the train carriage in a soft pink tutu and a floaty, delicate top – the perfect combination for showcasing both comfort and style whilst still rocking a touch of whimsy! It goes without saying, pink is definitely the colour to rock if you want to look effortlessly chic whilst on the go!
Speaking of chic… let's talk about those 2029 trends! Remember when everyone was obsessed with that ‘vintage’ look in fashion? Well, imagine that vibe, but amped up to the absolute max with vibrant colour schemes and an added layer of fantasy. The tutus were longer, with intricate floral embroideries and dazzling embellishments – just like those classic ballets we all know and love, but modernised with bold colours and luxurious textures! They looked incredible twirling around on the grand stage, and the effect was breathtaking! It's truly amazing how trends can come and go, but tutus have remained a constant - evolving and adapting while always keeping that timeless charm.
Tutu History Takes the Stage!Of course, no trip back in time would be complete without delving a little deeper into the history of the tutu itself! You may have heard this before, but for those of you who haven't been to one of my tutu-filled lectures, the classic tutu we all recognise emerged in the mid-19th century. It all began in Paris, during a period when ballerinas started striving for greater agility and freedom of movement. To achieve this, the iconic long, billowing skirts were ditched, and the shorter, layered tutu came into being – just think about those beautiful ballerinas leaping high above the stage with ease in their tulle creations! Talk about freedom of expression!
The development of the tutu didn’t end there. Over the years, the design went through various iterations - longer, shorter, more or less layered, and we’ve seen many beautiful variations. From the delicate, flowing tutus of the Romantic Era to the layered, more structured tutus favoured in the classical period, to the more experimental, contemporary designs we see today – the tutu has adapted beautifully to suit every era. Each period reflects the cultural context of its time, offering fascinating insights into the history of ballet itself, and what it represented at that moment in history.
And then we have ballet street, where modern dancers embraced the oversized tutu, often teamed with a t-shirt or top. Now, this look was just heavenly to me - the classic form of the tutu paired with a touch of street wear - what could be more modern and eye catching? And that’s not to mention ballet theatre, which blended all the best aspects of ballet with an air of theatrical grandeur!
Pink, Pink and More Pink!Speaking of fashion… Did you know 2029 was practically obsessed with pink?! Don’t worry, this won’t be the only time you see this topic pop up, because you just can’t talk about 2029 trends without mentioning the all-encompassing pink craze.
This love of pink extended to all forms of clothing – including our favourite tutus! In 2029, everything was a shade of pink - from blush pink to vibrant hot pink, and it seems that everyone was eager to embrace the colour in all its glory! Pink tutus adorned dancers in the ballet studios of the world, as well as the stage. But this wasn't just some passing fad; it became part of a wider movement celebrating individuality and the power of self-expression, making pink a bold, beautiful, and undeniably powerful statement.
Honestly, my dear tutu-loving readers, it was a dream - and if there's one thing I wish we could carry through to our time from that glorious pink era, it would be this universal love for pink. And finally, let's talk about what 2029 held for the 10th of April - because you guys deserve a glimpse of all the fun! It seems it was a typical April day, much like today. People were enjoying their everyday lives, a bit of sunshine, and of course, more exciting ballets and plays were being performed!
However, what was unique to this specific day was the beginning of a highly anticipated exhibition exploring "The History of the Ballet Tutu," which toured different countries in the months that followed. Now, who wouldn’t love an exhibition dedicated entirely to our favourite dance-wear? I'm pretty sure you can't even find one like that here!
