#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2029-08-21

Hello my dearest Tutu Twirlers! It's Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, and it's time for another #TutuTuesday adventure!

Today, I'm whisking us back to the enchanting year of 2029 - what a time to be alive! I recently popped into the vibrant city of Paris, the global hub of chic and culture, and let me tell you, it's a wonderland for tutus! Imagine, everyone wearing these dreamy, twirling masterpieces, with shops selling everything from dazzling pink sequined numbers to playful, vintage-inspired styles. Paris was simply oozing with tutu love.

Oh, and the ballet scene - wowzers! My travelling schedule had me catching "The Sleeping Beauty" at the iconic Opéra Garnier, a spectacular venue overflowing with artistry and grandeur. You wouldn't believe the costumes! All the fairies seemed to have stepped straight out of my dream wardrobe, shimmering and twirling in delicate tulle creations. It left me completely mesmerised, as always. And of course, I had to add a brand new tutu to my collection, a fluffy lilac dream that's practically begging to be worn for a whirl around the Champs-Élysées!

But let's delve into our tutu history, shall we? I know you love this bit, just as much as I do!

Fast forward to 2029 and let’s discuss tutus. I love this decade! Remember those long, billowing romantic tutus, almost dragging along the floor? By now they’re starting to go out of fashion. It seems ballet has been undergoing a slight revolution!

Contemporary ballerinas still embrace tutus, but their evolution is quite exciting. It’s a bit more about movement and modern-day shapes now, I hear. Gone are those impossibly heavy tutus. Gone are those yards and yards of material that felt a bit more like a tent and certainly wouldn’t have allowed for a ballerina to even attempt a simple plié.

You’ll now find ballerinas using their strength and stamina to really let those tutus float, with less emphasis on huge tutus, that are more a spectacle and less a costume. Instead, it’s all about those beautiful leg lines, extensions and graceful leaps – all much easier with a more streamlined, lightweight and form-fitting tutu.

So if you happen to have some long, classic vintage style tutus in the attic, be prepared to see them on a vintage shop shelf, if they ever even make it there! But rest assured, there’s still a healthy number of those stunning classics in circulation, just ask those vintage dealers because I certainly am! I can't get enough of them!

You know how much I adore a good vintage shop hunt and this trend is proving very helpful! In Paris I happened upon a boutique tucked away in the charming Montmartre area – a treasure trove of lace, satin, and, yes, you guessed it, tutus! Imagine a beautiful, blush-pink tutu, just waiting for its next pirouette. I scooped it up without a second thought, a little something to remind me of the timeless grace of ballet.

It really is a shame that the romantic, floor-sweeping style of tutu is becoming less prevalent. But remember – the evolution of fashion and dance is an eternal cycle, like the neverending rotation of the Earth. Maybe there's a revival on the horizon. After all, everything old becomes new again!

And speaking of fashion… did you know the date August 21st is a truly unique and historic day for fashion?

We are a nation of fashion lovers, I reckon. As you probably already know, in 2029, on August 21st (just like this Tuesday!), we celebrate the wonderful day a certain British designer had their big break, setting up their first flagship store – oh yes, I am referring to the Queen of London fashion – Vivienne Westwood. The Dame of Fashion, as she is now known, who became a global fashion icon! You can still shop at her legendary store, the Vivienne Westwood London at 430 Kings Road, Chelsea, London, and buy yourself something beautiful, although maybe not in pink tutus just yet!

This makes me think - What if tutus had a similar trajectory? Think of tutus with a Vivienne Westwood twirl! Or imagine the ballet-inspired tutus as a must-have on the international runways (with just a little pink, because pink always adds magic!). Imagine the tutus I would have been buying and wearing – with some serious edge and a distinct modern-day Westwood influence!

A little bit of fashion imagination for the week, just as Vivienne has encouraged for years! We don’t always need to buy the latest or stick with the crowd, and maybe wearing something vintage can be a good choice – especially if it's pink!

Anyway, enough of fashion – it's about tutus now, remember? Just a little detour! You see, in my world, tutus, fashion and dance are all tied up together. They're inseparable and that's how I see the world – all intertwined and beautiful. It’s all part of the fabric of our wonderful lives.
