The Beginning of the Tutu
So, where did these iconic, fluffy, frilly marvels of dancewear even come from? It might surprise you to learn that tutus were originally... well, they weren't actually tutus at all! Ballet dancers in the early 19th century would simply wear long, flowing skirts – kind of like a Grecian goddess, but for pirouettes! This style, called a "tutu à la romaine," was all the rage back in the Romantic period, making graceful, sweeping movements. Think of ballerinas looking more like wistful nymphs than the statuesque figures we see today!
But oh, how things changed! With the advent of real tutus – and by real, I mean the tutu romantique, the game of ballet changed forever! These tutus were shorter, often featuring a tiered or puffed design that gave them this gorgeous, billowing effect, ideal for showing off the dancers' athleticism and allowing them to leap, pirouette and even jump en pointe! Just imagine the thrill!
Twirling into the 20th Century
The early 20th century saw even more playful and daring developments. The iconic tutu of the tutu de ballet we know and love today started to become a real phenomenon! This style typically consists of several layers of tulle sewn to a bodice and a tight, fitted top. Oh, the drama, the elegance! You could say it was truly the beginning of the tutu as an iconic fashion statement!
This new kind of tutu was born in the Parisian opera house, my darling! The "tutu de ballet" took off, giving ballerinas even more freedom and elegance. From the dazzling shows to the elegant dance schools in Paris and across the globe, this design changed everything. It brought an element of ethereal beauty that added even more allure and majesty to the stage. The dance world truly had entered its own golden age, all thanks to this glorious and versatile piece of dancewear!

I love it because it can take on so many different personalities and styles! Whether you’re dreaming of the classics in The Nutcracker with its sugar plum fairy, or something completely unique, like those magnificent, extravagant tutus designed by Christian Lacroix for the Paris Opera Ballet – these days we've got something for everyone!
But darling, it’s not all about ballet! You see tutus everywhere now – they've become a global fashion phenomenon! Fashionistas wear tutus to galas, to music festivals, even to weddings! They’re perfect for anything – and I truly believe they are the epitome of female empowerment! It's about that fearless sense of whimsy, self-expression and femininity. Don't let anyone tell you you can’t wear a tutu for absolutely any occasion! ✨
My Tutu Travel Adventure!
This week, I’m taking my tutu journey to Berlin! I've always dreamed of seeing *Pina Bausch’s * Café Müller, a mesmerising performance that captures the heart of everyday life, and I just know I'll be surrounded by fellow tutu enthusiasts at the opera house!
After seeing the show, I'm off to shop the designer boutiques on Kurfürstendamm – the ultimate fashion haven. My little pink tutu will certainly stand out among the cutting-edge fashions of Berlin! After all, what's a stylish adventure without some glorious retail therapy? ?️
And what better way to journey across Germany than by train? Sitting by the window, watching the scenery zip by – oh, it's my absolute dream way to travel! A great outfit for any trip is a chic train-friendly, casual look! I am thinking of my soft, blush pink tutu and my go-to, knee-high boots! Effortlessly fashionable, and perfect for exploring!
