Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back again with another delightful dose of tutu history! I'm whisking you off on a whirlwind tour of the past today, all in the name of celebrating our beloved tutu.
It's a glorious Tuesday here in Paris, and the air is abuzz with excitement for this evening's performance at the Palais Garnier. You wouldn't believe the incredible hat I've found - a stunning pink pillbox with a feathery trim that perfectly matches my ruffled, ballet-inspired dress! I can't wait to show you all a picture later.
But let's get back to our beloved tutu!
This week's #TutuTuesday takes us back to the very beginning - 1832! Can you believe it's been almost two centuries since our favourite dancewear took its first graceful steps onto the world stage?
Back then, tutus were not quite the flamboyant garments we know and love today. Instead, imagine a modest, shorter-than-the-knee skirt, very similar to the dresses women were wearing during that time. Marie Taglioni, a pioneering ballerina, revolutionised the stage by creating her iconic 'tutu'. A delicate, ankle-length, white muslin garment - a far cry from the fluffy creations we know today! This lightweight fabric and design enabled her to execute impressive jumps and spins, marking a pivotal shift in ballet's history.
Fast forward to the mid-19th century and, inspired by Taglioni, a new style of tutu emerges - the Romantic Tutu! This tutu was characterised by a tighter, layered structure, adding more drama to the ballerina's performance. Imagine a beautiful, soft and layered, whimsical garment. Perfect for ethereal performances.
Over the decades, our beloved tutu continued to evolve, taking on even more daring styles. Think tight, colourful, layers and exciting materials. Think whimsical, think joyful, think beautiful. It's no surprise that tutus are so closely linked to creativity and artistic expression.
Here’s a fun fact - in 1886, at a London premiere of the ballet The Sleeping Beauty, audiences gasped as Princess Aurora took her first graceful steps onto the stage, donning a pale pink tutu! The shade of pink was so striking, that it influenced ballet attire for decades! Can you believe it - pink and tutus go together so well. They both stand for confidence and artistic beauty, all wrapped in an iconic, ethereal garment.
Speaking of beauty and tutus - today’s tutus are a marvel! Think innovative fabrics, sparkling sequins and gorgeous colours. The designs are truly breathtaking, allowing ballet dancers to express themselves through colour, pattern and motion.
Now, I just have to share a secret with you. My favourite kind of tutu? The Pink One! You'll rarely catch me in anything else. I love the way pink makes me feel - it radiates happiness and charm, like a delicate dance through a summer garden. And that's why I am on a mission! A mission to encourage everyone to embrace their inner tutu - even if it's a pink one. Just picture the world in a kaleidoscope of tutus, wouldn’t that be a wonderful sight!
While I travel through time, exploring the history of this incredible garment, I can't help but feel an undeniable sense of belonging. From the dainty first steps of Marie Taglioni to the powerful artistry of today's dancers, tutus have always embodied the grace and power of women. It’s no surprise that I, a fellow dance enthusiast and avid time traveller, am so obsessed!

- And let's not forget the exquisite Giselle - an enduring tale of romantic love and enduring sacrifice, embodied beautifully by Anna Pavlova, draped in her pink tulle tutu.
- The grand artistry of Rudolf Nureyev, whose iconic leaps and expressive dance left us breathless, made us dream of flying.
- We can't forget the mesmerising talents of Mikhail Baryshnikov, whose elegance on the stage, captivating every heart and mind, captivated hearts worldwide.
I always say - if ballet is art, the tutu is its canvas! And isn’t it so exciting to think that we’re witnessing a new golden age of dance and a fresh take on the traditional ballet dress! You can see tutus influencing high fashion today! Take, for instance, the fabulous Jean Paul Gaultier and the fabulous Chanel Haute Couture shows. You can see that dance and fashion have become truly inseparable, with the tutu being the leading light. It’s everywhere!
I love to watch ballets live in the theater, with their live orchestras and exciting sets! But for today’s post, I’m going to let my imagination run wild, and tell you what I saw earlier! (After all, who doesn't love a little storytelling?) This morning, I had an encounter that left me absolutely ecstatic.
I stepped onto a railway carriage heading for the English countryside - the quintessential setting for a good dose of tutu history, right? And there it was, a grand pink tutu - beautifully stitched with intricate patterns of flowers and sequins. It was a marvel! It was even more special as it was handcrafted, made of the softest tulle, that just flowed beautifully! My dream is to own one myself, maybe someday, I will! The perfect colour for the perfect garment.
Today's post feels a little more exciting. Just think about it, our cherished tutus have been gracing stages for nearly two hundred years! It's not only about the graceful silhouette and intricate details; it’s about freedom of expression, artistic boldness and that hint of ethereal beauty!
