Hello lovelies! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where tutus reign supreme! Today, it's #TutuTuesday, and I'm taking you on a journey through time, all in the name of that magical, twirly, pink delight – the ballet tutu!
It's a bright, beautiful Tuesday in July (9th to be precise!), and I'm writing this from the bustling, fabulous city of London! Oh, this place is buzzing with energy! We're just getting back from a delightful trip to Paris, where we indulged in the most scrumptious pastries, admired the iconic Eiffel Tower, and, of course, took in a couple of breathtaking ballet performances! We were completely enthralled by the costumes – especially those extravagant tutus!
Speaking of tutus... today's #TutuTuesday post is going to be a deep dive into the fascinating world of ballet tutu history! It’s fascinating to think about how this iconic garment has evolved over centuries!
Now, you all know me – I'm Emma, a Derbyshire lass who's utterly obsessed with all things tutu. I adore the colour pink, I adore shopping, and I ADORE twirling! That's why, back in the early 2020s (yes, before you even realised how trendy pink tutus would become!), I started this little blog as a way to celebrate the sheer brilliance of the tutu, from its origins to its modern iterations. It's a journey through history, culture, and a dash of magic!
From Humble Beginnings to Ballroom Gowns:Now, where did it all start? We have to rewind way back in time to the late 1700s, a time when dancers wore long, flowing gowns that were more about comfort than anything else. Imagine, no frothy, romantic layers of tulle! Ballet was all about grace, yes, but it was also about showcasing a dancer’s impressive leaps and elegant lines.
Fast forward a bit to the 19th century, and the iconic “romantic tutu” appeared on the scene. Remember the ethereal tutus in Swan Lake? The airy, graceful ones with many layers? That's the romantic tutu! It became the go-to choice for ballerinas in ballets like Giselle, creating a visually enchanting spectacle. We can’t imagine these performances without their magical costumes, right?
A Short Skirt Revolution:Things really took a turn in the late 1800s when the “classical tutu,” our modern-day tutu icon, was born! Imagine a skirt shorter than a dancer’s knees, showcasing beautiful lines, athleticism, and movement. Imagine those graceful pirouettes, jeté leaps, and impressive leaps in an all-new light. The tutu transformed from a simple garment into an indispensable tool that truly helped enhance the dance experience!
The classical tutu also allowed dancers to move more freely, especially as the style of ballet began to embrace greater complexity.
Now, while I absolutely adore the grace and beauty of the traditional tutu, we've got to remember the constant evolution of the garment. There were all sorts of exciting innovations. There was a bit of experimentation with tutu styles! I mean, even the ballet world embraces fashion trends!
Tutus Beyond the Stage:Let’s be honest, who doesn't dream of owning their very own pink tutu? Today, thanks to designers, stylists, and an amazing community of tutu lovers (I’m part of that crew!), we can celebrate the elegance of the tutu in everyday life! You see people walking down the street in all sorts of cool tutu variations – casual tutu dresses, fun tutus that go with boots and jeans, and even chic, sleek ones with unique textures and embellishments.
This movement to bring tutus beyond the stage? Absolutely brilliant!
We even see tutu-inspired outfits featured in all kinds of runway shows. Isn’t it marvelous? So exciting!

My Love for London:Oh, you wouldn’t believe how much I’m enjoying London! It’s my absolute favourite city, especially this time of year. The air is just so fresh, and you can almost feel summer around every corner.
Speaking of summer… London in July means exciting theatre shows! Oh, don’t get me started on theatre! So many magnificent musicals, so much incredible talent on the stage. Of course, I can't resist heading to see a few ballet performances too – some new works, and some classical pieces! The other day, I even saw a street performance in Covent Garden! Can you imagine – a dazzling, elegant ballet show in the open air? I was utterly mesmerised! The talent and artistry of these dancers! Oh, it takes my breath away!
It’s amazing how ballet seems to bring people together from all different backgrounds, with everyone in awe of the dancers and the amazing skill on show. There is nothing more magical than the magic of ballet. You all agree with me, don't you?
I’m going to finish up now. Time for me to head out for an evening of ballet watching and to, perhaps, take a stroll along the river and indulge in a few, oh-so-delicious fish and chips! It’s just such a fun and lively city! And you can bet that my pink tutu will be along for the ride!
