Hello darling dears! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller Emma, back for another Tuesday trip through the wonderful world of ballet history. This week, I'm taking us right back to the beginning... or at least, the beginning of tutus as we know them today!
It's the 1st of October 2030, and I'm actually sitting in a lovely Parisian cafe, enjoying a delightful macaron (strawberry, of course!). The air is buzzing with anticipation for the new season at the Opéra Garnier - and you can't help but feel the excitement bubbling over in the streets. It's absolutely fabulous, and just the perfect setting to explore the origins of the iconic tutu!
You see, the story of the tutu is as much a story about the evolution of dance as it is about fashion. Way back in the 15th and 16th centuries, when dancing was very formal and involved lots of grand courtly movements, women wore very elaborate, restrictive costumes. They had large, full skirts that limited their movements – not much jumping and twirling there!
It was only during the Romantic era (think swirling skirts and big feelings!) that a change came about. Choreographers wanted their ballerinas to be free, light, and graceful. You know, like a flock of birds taking flight (imagine a beautiful flock of flamingos – chefs kiss). This freedom was essential to showcasing the delicate artistry of ballet, and so, a change had to happen!
Imagine the delight! Gone were the clunky, heavy skirts, replaced by what became known as the "Romantic tutu" - a shorter, lighter, tulle skirt that would swirl and twirl with every graceful move. You know, that kind of light, floaty skirt that practically begs for a twirl?! This beautiful and liberating new fashion paved the way for new ballet steps, including the "whirlpool" and the iconic "arabesque" (yes, the one you see every single ballerina perform - iconic!). The ballerinas could literally dance on air! And wouldn't you know it, these tutus just begged to be decorated with flowers and jewels – giving the perfect feminine touch.
The rest, as they say, is history. The "Romantic tutu" evolved into the "classical tutu," with its distinctive multiple layers of tulle that provided that famous fluffy, billowing silhouette. Talk about drama, darling! And it's pretty much become synonymous with ballet itself!
Here's the fun part - this shift was fuelled by some pretty big-name personalities! The beautiful Marie Taglioni (imagine dancing on tippy-toes like a wisp of smoke! Just stunning!), a renowned ballerina of the 1800s, is credited with popularizing the shorter tutu, with its airy elegance that sent the Parisian audiences wild.
Now, I could go on and on about the different variations of tutus (we've got the tutu plat, the tutu paquet, and even the tutu "paquita"... it's endless, dear!). But the important thing is this: the tutu's journey from restrictive gowns to light and graceful attire embodies the very soul of ballet itself.
And just like those grand ladies in the old courts who wouldn't have dreamt of wearing a short skirt (can you even imagine? gasp), we're in a new age now! Let's embrace the twirl, embrace the grace, and embrace the gorgeous tutu! Let it symbolise a time when ballerinas, just like women everywhere, were freed to fly, dance, and express themselves freely!
