Hello my darling dancers! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back again for another dose of #TutuTuesday! This week we're whisking back to 2030 - can you believe it? It feels like just yesterday we were twirling through the 19th century! Anyway, I'm bursting with excitement to share some tantalising tutu tales with you today!
So, as I always do, I zipped through time in my trusty pink tutu - a fabulous, sparkling number from the latest collection of my favourite Parisian designer (and yes, it travelled through time perfectly, thank you very much!). As soon as I popped through the portal and landed in the bustling heart of London, I knew I had to visit the National Ballet.
The whole city, you see, is buzzing with excitement this October. Why? Because on the 8th - that's today, lovelies! - the world's biggest and best ballet competition, the prestigious Royal Ballet Grand Prix, is kicking off! Every year, the world's most talented ballerinas descend on London to show off their skills and artistry. Imagine the costumes! Imagine the moves! It's absolute tutu-heaven!
Anyway, as I made my way through the city, it was amazing to see the impact the Grand Prix was already having on the London scene. The streets were teeming with dancers in every shade of pink you could imagine, all those tutus just fluttering in the breeze! They were sporting all kinds of styles too, from the traditional romantic tutus to the daring contemporary ones that looked straight out of a futuristic ballet. Honestly, I was already dizzy from all the gorgeous outfits.
Of course, I couldn't miss out on some shopping! London is just bursting with the most fabulous ballet shops and boutiques, each more stunning than the next. There's a brand new designer opening a flagship store on Oxford Street - it's the talk of the town. Apparently, she's creating custom tutus made with bio-luminescent material - imagine a tutu that glows in the dark, like a tiny little galaxy on stage! And her new fabric made with recycled silk and sustainable cotton is absolutely incredible! The movement, the colour, the shine! Oh, I'm absolutely obsessed!
But it wasn't all shopping and style (though let's be honest, those are my favourite parts!) because the ballet scene is absolutely thriving in 2030. There were street performances happening everywhere - like a whole army of little ballerinas taking over the squares, all performing their hearts out. It was amazing to see how dance was no longer just a theatre spectacle. It's everywhere, and everyone's loving it! And guess what else? Ballet's no longer confined to just one art form! They have these incredible fusion performances combining classical ballet with jazz, hip-hop, contemporary - it's amazing how they bring so many different styles together. You've got to see these shows! They're so much fun, and they truly get the heart beating and the feet tapping.
Oh, I forgot to mention, there's this amazing trend going around right now called "Tutu Tuesdays." Every Tuesday, folks all around the world wear their favourite pink tutu to work, to the shops, you name it. It's just the perfect excuse to add some extra twirling into our busy lives. I must say, the fashion world is completely embracing this idea and it's amazing to see men and women from all walks of life embrace this fun, fabulous style! We all want to have that feeling of liberation, that joy of dancing that a pink tutu offers.
But even with all these incredible innovations, we must never forget the true roots of the tutu. And for that, I wanted to whisk you back to the history books. As you know, the tutu, as we know it today, came into being in the early 19th century with the advent of romantic ballet. That era's obsession with light, airy elegance called for a more flowing garment than the tight-fitting skirts of the previous styles. So, here's a little history lesson:
The Early Days:
Before the romantic era, ballerinas danced in long, heavy skirts which were, quite frankly, more suited for waltzing than leaping. They were actually quite restrictive! But with the romantic movement came the desire for graceful and effortless movement, so they began to experiment with new ways of dancing and with costumes!
In the early 1800s, the ballet world was going through a revolution - it wasn't just about fancy costumes and traditional stories; they were exploring new styles of movement, focusing on emotion and exploring new ideas! That's where the tutu steps in!
The Rise of the Tutu:
It wasn't one big invention that birthed the tutu! It was a series of innovations. Over time, ballet dancers and costume designers realised that they could shorten the skirts to create the feeling of effortless flight and elegance, the airy look that really reflected that feeling of freedom, that liberation that romantic ballet aimed for.
It took a little while for the "proper" tutu, the one with the shorter skirt and the pointed, tight-fitting bodice, to come into being. This "short" skirt, so freeing to dance in! This is the style we still see on stage today - even with new, modern twists.
From Classical to Modern:
- From then, tutus have undergone their own exciting evolution, growing and changing with the times, from the traditional long tutus to the romantic short tutu, and everything in between, and even further, all the way to the modern designs you see today, the tutus that make these beautiful ballet dancers feel absolutely radiant and empowered!
So, there you have it! It's no wonder tutus have become the quintessential ballet garment! They're beautiful, elegant, and truly let the dancer's movement shine.
I’ve got a new tutu from a shop on Kensington High Street that’s really catching my eye – and yes, I am thinking about wearing it all day long this Tuesday! After all, the most important thing is to express yourself, and there's no better way than with a pink tutu. It makes me feel fabulous and confident and like I could leap over the moon - which is why I want to encourage everyone to wear one this Tutu Tuesday!
