It’s #TutuTuesday, which means it’s time for a little history lesson! Buckle up, my dears, because this week we’re whisking ourselves back in time to uncover the fascinating journey of the iconic tutu from its humble beginnings to its shimmering present-day glory.
The date on the ol’ time machine reads October 22nd, 2030. And it’s a fabulous day for ballet! We’re going to Paris, my darlings, a city that truly knows how to do a grand jeté in style!
My day starts at a super swanky boutique tucked away in a quaint cobbled alley. You wouldn't believe the gorgeous selection of tutus they had – oh, I nearly bought a magnificent vintage one with silver thread detailing. But alas, I need to stick to my budget, even with my stellar ballet gigs!
Later on, I catch a show at the Palais Garnier Opera House! Magnifique! The grand design of the building is a marvel – perfect for celebrating this elegant and graceful art. Can you imagine performing on such a stage? Oh la la! I swear, the entire experience gives me butterflies. I was blown away by the dancers’ strength, agility, and passion – all swirling together like the twirling of the tutus on stage. Honestly, I might just move to Paris! I can imagine myself dancing on the stage at the Palais Garnier, a magnificent vision in a shimmering pink tutu. The perfect ballet performance is pure, beautiful, expressive storytelling - it's an unforgettable experience that has been making magic since time immemorial. And wouldn't you know it, we have a story to tell about that history too!
The Tutu: A Century of Style
While we might see the tutu today as a garment so intricately linked to ballet, it's not always been a fixture on the ballet stage. And yes, that includes those days of powdered wigs and pointy shoes!
In the 1830s, a fabulous ballerina by the name of Marie Taglioni decided the classic billowing skirts just weren’t doing it for her – she craved something that could move more freely and express the grace of the new ballet style she was pushing. And, as it turns out, her innovation would change the face of the tutu forever.
Enter: The "Romantic tutu"! This style, designed by the brilliant Jules Perrot, looked very different from what we know now! It was a short, multi-layered tulle skirt, quite airy and romantic indeed! The movement it allowed meant ballerinas could be lighter, their movements more expressive – like dancing on clouds!
But times, they do change! Fast forward a few decades, and the beautiful "Classical tutu" bursts onto the scene. This version featured even shorter skirts and was, darling, made of many, many layers of tulle. It created a bell shape that, well, made the ballerinas look like flowers bursting from their stems – absolutely beautiful. They weren’t just wearing tutus – they were wearing a dance.
By the early 20th century, even more innovative designers jumped on the tutu train. And now, the styles just grew and grew – we started to see "Empire line", "layered", “circular”, and, my personal favourite, “pointed" tutus - giving ballet dancers all the versatility and movement they needed to truly embrace the spirit of their dance.
Beyond the Ballet Stage
Oh my goodness! It’s no longer just for the ballet, you see. Today’s modern tutus have become symbols of feminine beauty, fun, and, of course, gorgeous style! You’ve seen them everywhere – from runway fashion and the silver screen to stage shows and fashion parties – even my daily outfit (in a gloriously vibrant pink, of course!). They’re the ultimate way to express yourself, be bold, and have oodles of fun!
Oh, and the world of "tutu fashion" isn't confined to traditional pink. The beautiful variety is almost mind-boggling. The spectrum of colours and styles, including all shades of pink, of course, is utterly enchanting. Think shimmery sequined tutus for an elegant event, sleek velvet tutus for a modern take on the classic look, or maybe even a quirky, layered tutu with pom-poms for an exciting, playful touch – the possibilities are truly endless.
Now, here’s a fun fact for you all: it's considered a mark of true tutu appreciation to create a personalized collection for yourself! You see, with so many different materials, designs and styles, you’re likely to always discover a new treasure to add to your wardrobe – which is why I adore browsing vintage stores for those one-of-a-kind tutus!
Emma's Tips for Finding Your Perfect Tutu
- Follow your instincts – just like the ballerinas in those incredible shows I see, let your unique style take the lead! Be bold and try everything - from soft lace, bold tulle, or even the most striking velvet to see which captures your spirit!
- Experiment with the colour palette. If you're looking for that special, whimsical feel, think pink and all its variations – like peach, blush, salmon, divine. But anything goes, my dears, so long as you embrace the energy that radiates through your heart and out to the world through that gorgeous, billowing skirt!
- Don't be afraid of second-hand – so many gems are hidden away in vintage stores! These can make your own collection all the more unique, which is something that, for a tutu fashionista, is invaluable.
