Hello, my darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back again for another enchanting journey through the world of tutus! ?
Today, on this glorious Tuesday, the 28th of January 2031, we’re stepping back in time – a time before the shimmering magic of ballet wear that we know and adore! I'm getting so excited to tell you all about it – because, honestly, I simply cannot resist a good history lesson with a little bit of pink sprinkled in, can I? ??
Hold onto your tutus, darlings, because we’re going back to… well, I'm not sure, actually! My time travelling gizmo’s a little wonky at the moment, but let’s just say it’s a place and time where the modern tutu wasn’t quite the statement it is today! ?
I arrived at this delightful, albeit slightly confusing location, wearing my pink tutu and matching ribbon – wouldn't dare be caught dead in anything else! You see, the ballet dancers in the time I arrived were wearing these incredibly practical – and admittedly boring – white, fluffy, floor-length skirts! Now, I have nothing against white (pink is better, obviously), but when you’re swirling and leaping, why hide all that beauty with such…mundanity?
Imagine, my darlings! All those beautiful graceful moves hidden away underneath a billowing white sheet! It was just a fashion tragedy waiting to happen. And frankly, my dear, it’s the only thing tragic about the whole thing. ?
This wasn't always the case, however! Before this era, these “tutus” weren’t quite so voluminous! Oh, what an adventure I’d had researching for today’s post! I found records, photos and even some incredible video snippets from what felt like a million years ago (which, really, in terms of tutu evolution, it probably was)!
It seems, way, way back, these "tutus" were almost…wait for it…a simple, short skirt with lots and lots of ruffles! I swear I spotted some little ballerinas looking suspiciously like Victorian ladies! Talk about taking us back! The dresses, oh darling! Frills galore! They just made me want to pull out a pair of needle and thread and have a go at making one myself!
By the end of my trip to the past, I was utterly inspired! It reminded me of the wonderful power of fashion - the way it changes, evolves and adapts with us! Every era leaves its own mark on ballet and its fashion.
Now, back to our wonderful world! As I'm typing this post in my pink-filled home office in lovely Derbyshire, I'm actually on my way to an incredible ballet performance in the heart of London! I just love the vibrancy of ballet shows - all those bright lights, those amazing dancers, the dazzling costumes. This is one of the best things about time-travelling: the endless possibility to see new things, to be inspired by every period, and every show, in time.
Before I disappear for the performance (I’ll be tweeting live from my new account, @EmmaPinkTutu – you should follow me if you want a peek at this amazing performance!) I wanted to remind you all about something! What is it that we’ve discovered today?
That a good tutu is simply an essential part of ballet life! ✨ And I’m not just talking about the classic, frilly tutu. No! I’m talking about how important it is to express ourselves! You may not wear a pink tutu to work every day, but we all need something to make us feel like we're floating on a cloud!
I'll be sure to fill you all in on what I learned tonight - about fashion in this day and age, about history, about tutus (of course) – tomorrow, on #TutuWednesday! ?
Until then, darlings, wear your tutus loud and proud and always, always remember -
It's a pink tutu kind of life! ??✨
P.S. I am also making a little tutu design of the day post this week! Follow me at #TutuOOTD - a bit of a tutu selfie style blog on my adventures! I am posting pics all week – come join me! ? ?
