#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2031-02-04

Welcome, darlings, to another #TutuTuesday! I'm your girl, Emma, and today I'm whisking us back in time for a little historical ballet tutu exploration, so grab a glass of bubbly, put on your fanciest pair of dancing shoes and settle in, because this one's going to be a twirl!

Today's date is 2031-02-04, and this week, I've journeyed back to a most captivating era. Think swirling skirts, decadent décor, and the blossoming of romanticism! As we delve into the past, we'll be discovering how tutus came to be the symbol of elegance and artistry they are today.

It’s always a delight to slip into the past, especially on my trusty railway trips. That delightful rhythmic click-clack as we glide past rolling countryside is just divine! (You know you're just as thrilled about train journeys as I am!) Today's travel back in time brings me to the heart of ... well, I'm not sure where yet! I can only describe it as the perfect mix of Victorian bustle with a dash of Edwardian sparkle. Oh, and the fashion! Oh, the fashion! Think bonnets and bustles, and dresses with such enormous, swirling skirts that they take up entire rooms. What fun it would be to slip into such a dramatic silhouette for an afternoon.

Let's travel to the very heart of tutu history. In the 1800s, Marie Taglioni took the world by storm, not just with her grace and skill, but by ditching the restrictive panniers and corsetry of the time. She was revolutionary for her day, literally 'dancing the world' into an era of light, flowing tulle. Her iconic 'La Sylphide' debut, wearing what they then called a 'tutu', completely transformed how we saw ballet.

We're lucky in that, in this period, tutus are being embraced across all facets of life -

Look, in our modern world, the tutu has come a long way. From classic ballets, to street styles, the tutus are popping up everywhere, a little like those beautiful pink ballet shoes! It's simply the perfect garment for fashion enthusiasts and ballet lovers.

Today's world has taken it to another level! Now there’s the ‘short’ tutu – a fun little style perfect for every-day use, for walks around town and for that delightful shopping trip. The mini tutu is an iconic image we associate with today, bringing back that fun of dancing and lightness into the world around us! Just be warned, they are surprisingly comfy and it's pretty easy to get carried away in them and buy 20 just in case one gets 'worn out', a little like your favourite ballet shoes.

Even some fashion houses have created elegant gowns for evening wear that seem inspired by tutus. The style is definitely all around us and the tutu has been ‘deconstructed’ as they call it to become one of the fashion trends of the day, it really is in fashion at the moment, if that’s even a phrase, haha.

Oh, and the ‘punk’ tutu? They’re pretty iconic and not your normal tutus - but very chic! Think leather, safety pins, lots of glitter. Perfect for when you want to be both a little edgy, a little cool, but still completely glam, which of course you can be in your tutu! I find I am increasingly dressing for my comfort rather than any trends these days.
