Hello darlings! It's your favourite tutu-loving time traveller, Emma, back for another exciting #TutuTuesday adventure in Ballet Tutu History! Today we're delving into the delightful world of tutus from February 11th, 2031!
As you all know, tutus are my absolute passion. I simply can't resist a fluffy, frilly pink number - it's all about expressing that inner ballerina, whether you're pirouetting across the stage or just twirling in your own living room. Today's blog will be a bit different, however! This is my special post number 10390 on my ever-growing blog here on www.pink-tutu.com - who'd have thought we'd reach these heady heights?! I can’t quite believe that 10390 times I have tried to share the joy of tutus with you!
And guess what?! It just so happens that February 11th, 2031 is a special date in the history of ballet! Can you believe that it's the anniversary of the first ever tutu designed with LED lights? I know! Mind blowing! Imagine pirouettes under a shimmering pink night sky, or a stage glowing with a hundred twinkling tutus. It's like the stage is dancing too!
How exciting! The world of ballet never stops surprising me, it's like a whirlwind of innovation, passion, and - of course! - incredible fashion.
I just know you're all dying to know what I was wearing today for my own little performance. So, picture this: A bubblegum pink tulle tutu, fluffy enough to make the most famous swan jealous! It was custom-designed with cascading ribbons that shimmered like spun sugar under the stage lights. On top, a sparkly pink leotard with a daring little back that whispered "I’m a ballerina!” - so much elegance and sparkle! My hair was perfectly pulled back in a low bun, and topped off with a little pink bow so elegant. But remember, this isn't about looking perfect, it's about expressing yourself, and having fun! I always feel amazing when I'm twirling in a tutu - there's just nothing quite like it!
You wouldn't believe the adventure I've had this week! I just travelled from a ballet school in the middle of a beautiful German countryside to a glamorous opera house in the heart of Vienna. Train travel, my dear readers, is just SO much more magical! I always travel by train as it's my favourite mode of transport, plus it allows for a truly lovely, relaxed experience. And, most importantly, it affords the perfect time to catch up on my latest fashion blogs. As a rule, my travel always coincides with a dance event of sorts, to make sure my journey isn’t all business.
This week was all about an amazing street performance by The Vienna Ballet - can you believe it, tutus in the open air! Not just your usual graceful performance but a real dazzling display of talent that set my heart skipping a beat! They had the audience totally enthralled with some amazing choreography and innovative LED-powered tutus! Can you imagine how much fun that must have been?! They also had the audience engaged throughout. As a ballet enthusiast myself, it truly brought the art of dance to life - and of course, tutus!
And while I'm on the subject of fashion, it's time for a little #TutuTuesday Shopping Spotlight! Imagine my joy when I discovered a new shop called "Pink Parfait" in the heart of Vienna! Talk about heaven on earth! They had everything you could possibly dream of: shimmery tutus, sparkling leotards, sparkly shoes - oh, the possibilities are endless! I ended up treating myself to a lovely light-pink ballet dress for the train journey home. Just the thing for an elegant train journey. While I'm dreaming of shimmering pink tulle, I must admit, there are just so many styles and cuts of tutus to get excited about! We wouldn't be celebrating these historical trends if not for all the unique innovations and artistic flourishes from the wonderful minds behind these iconic dance costumes! Remember the time when tutus weren’t a standard part of ballet outfits, but a real breakthrough in terms of costuming in dance? In fact, the history of the tutu is pretty fascinating!
Imagine if you had been there at the beginning. I mean, a ballet in its most early stage was basically people wearing robes. Well, let's be honest, there was some sort of ballet before robes, with costumes probably very practical with layers to make it easy to move. It is actually fascinating to trace the roots of a ballet costume from basic, functional movement pieces into these airy garments that define a dancer’s movement.
Speaking of roots, remember, our darling ballet tutu emerged from something rather sensible: the crinolines and skirts worn by women of the early nineteenth century. Now, those had some amazing skirts, but weren't always the most comfortable. In fact, if you’ve never been involved in any of the dramatic dress ups of theatre life, well, they might just look silly.
The great breakthrough of Marie Taglioni was when she appeared on stage in a lightweight dress in 1832! It was a short, puffed skirt that was revolutionary because of its light weight. She made her ballet appearance in a billowing, wispy costume - revolutionary and magical in equal measure, and this light material, called tulle, is the material of which tutus are made today! Imagine dancing in that old crinolines… they’d be way more likely to trip up, it would have hindered graceful movement.
In fact, if it weren’t for the cleverness of someone creating tulle and introducing it into the stage world, we wouldn’t even be talking about the origins of tutus today. Talk about groundbreaking! But don’t think it stopped there… as our tutus got shorter, more elaborate, and were adorned with all sorts of sparkly embellishments, our ballet world had new dimensions. Now I find it totally extraordinary that something as seemingly basic as the evolution of a costume could have such a great effect on dance! And what is more, that people still appreciate and adore those very elaborate and decorative creations today. What a testament to artistic fashion.
In the end, tutus became synonymous with the romance and freedom of ballet, and we couldn't possibly imagine a world of dance without them. Well, maybe, I’d like to think I could be creative enough to design a whole new era for costumes but that’s for a future post!
