This week, we're delving into the Romantic Era in ballet, from 1830 to 1870. This period is a real turning point for tutus, my dears. It was all about flowing lines, airy grace, and a shift from the bulky costumes of the past towards something light, elegant, and oh-so-romantic.
Hold onto your tutus, ladies! This journey's about to get exciting!
The Romantic Era: A Dance of Innovation
The 19th century saw ballet transform, leaving the rigid, strict movements of the court behind and embracing passion and expressiveness. You can see this change reflected in the costumes, with tutus evolving alongside the artistry of the dancers.
The "Romantic" tutu is my absolute favourite. This style was introduced in the 1830s, designed for Maria Taglioni's iconic performance in La Sylphide. Gone were the long, layered skirts! Now, ballerinas graced the stage in soft, billowing, knee-length skirts, exposing the legs and creating a lightness and fluidity that mesmerised the audience.
This style is all about achieving a whimsical, ethereal effect, accentuating the grace of the ballerina's movements. Imagine soft tulle billowing around a dancer's legs as she leaps across the stage! Just thinking about it makes me want to don my pink tutu and dance the night away.
But here's a fun fact – you can thank fashion trends for this revolutionary design! It’s inspired by the Romantic era in art and literature.
Can you imagine the looks on the faces of the fashion critics of the day?! The daring move to reveal the legs of ballerinas in an era where societal standards demanded a modest and covered figure – oh my, the shock of it all! They would never dream of showing their legs in public, and now ballerinas were doing it on stage!
This daring choice of revealing legs was a true game-changer, setting the stage for a revolution in dance and fashion. The world was just starting to discover the power of "legs-on-show"!
The romantic tutu brought forth an era of beautiful costumes with flowing lines and movement, a vision of grace, elegance, and the ballerina's perfect line – all brought together by that revolutionary touch of exposed leg. This is an era in ballet that we must appreciate!
The Evolution of the Tutu
From there, the romantic tutu continued to evolve, finding new expressions and styles, paving the way for the tutus of today. As ballerinas sought to showcase increasingly elaborate movements and expressive dance styles, so the tutu transformed to match.
The romantic tutu paved the way for even more beautiful and daring styles, including the "pagliacci" tutu, designed for performances in comedies, and the "whirl" tutu with its tightly packed layers, adding even more volume and texture. Each variation contributed to the rich history of the tutu, a testament to the artistic vision of generations of ballet dancers and costume designers.
Where To See Romantic Era Style Ballet
But this isn’t just about fashion! The Romantic era in ballet is a beautiful, magical time in dance history. Think ethereal, delicate dances, like Giselle, the tragic story of a peasant girl.
My personal favourite in the Romantic era is La Sylphide. Just seeing those dancers swirl and leap, it's truly beautiful, just magical, just utterly mesmerising!
But, don’t worry if you can't get your hands on a ticket to see La Sylphide on this side of time, my darling! There are lots of other fantastic ways to appreciate the history of the tutu and the romantic era of dance. The next time you go to the theatre, don’t just look at the dancing; also watch the details on their tutus, and see the artistry on display in each beautifully crafted garment.

And guess what my lovelies? On 2031-09-02, my favourite dance performance is happening - a gala event of classic ballet excerpts! I can't wait! A show in one of the magnificent, gilded theaters that just whisper "history" as soon as you step through the doors, an ornate, luxurious, historic backdrop for these beautiful pieces. They've got a piece of Giselle on the programme too - one of my personal favourites!
Of course, for any true ballerina like me, a trip to the theatre requires a brand new, perfectly matched tutu to fit the occasion! My current favourite for the upcoming season is my sparkly pale pink, vintage-inspired tutu with hand-beaded details!
And, as always, I can't resist stopping at a boutique, my absolute favourite, for some gorgeous fashion inspiration, because I just can't go out to a performance without some seriously chic outfits! My latest acquisitions are a floral brocade jacket with beautiful 3D embroidery, a long-sleeved cream chiffon dress, and some stunning shoes!
