A Journey to 19th Century Paris ??
Now, buckle up your tap shoes, because we're about to go on a journey through time, starting in the enchanting city of Paris, back in the early 1800s.
You might be surprised to know that the tutu as we know it didn’t just spring up overnight! It was a gradual evolution, much like a ballerina slowly working her way up to that perfect arabesque.
Imagine this: the dancers back then were covered from head to toe in billowing layers of silk and tulle, making it quite a challenge to execute even a simple pas de bourrée! It was during this time that a visionary dancer and choreographer, Marie Taglioni, decided to embrace a radical new idea - freedom of movement!
Enter the "Romantic" Tutu ?
And thus, the Romantic Tutu was born. A revolutionary garment that discarded those bulky skirts for a simple, knee-length, tiered tulle skirt, allowing dancers to soar and twirl with grace and elegance. It was all about lightness and flow, showcasing the beauty and power of the female form like never before. It even inspired the "ballet flats" style that we still see worn on and off the stage.
A New Century, A New Style
As the century progressed, the Romantic tutu morphed and adapted, evolving into the tutu we know today. It took on different shapes, like the waisted tutu - popularised by the graceful dancers of the 19th Century. Imagine a flowing, tulle skirt delicately gathering around the waistline, enhancing the delicate silhouette. Simply divine!
But of course, this new freedom of movement was all about highlighting those dazzling legs! You see, this was the era when a woman’s leg was truly considered a thing of beauty. They were often celebrated with painted tights that added even more artistry to the dancers’ performance. I absolutely love those dramatic visuals, don’t you?
Tutu Through The Decades ✨
And oh my, what a whirlwind journey it's been since! Throughout the 20th Century, the tutu continued to transform and evolve, becoming a reflection of the styles and movements of its time.
We've seen the tutus of the ballets russes with their flowing, opulent designs. The neoclassical tutus of the mid-20th century that became famous in the work of Balanchine were known for their streamlined silhouette and minimalist elegance. The tutus of modern dance broke free from tradition, with experimental, asymmetrical shapes and layers of fabric to tell captivating stories. I simply love how each period brought a different look to the tutu and expressed a completely different personality in dance!
The Tutu Today and Beyond
Here in the 21st century, the tutu is a true fashion icon, loved by dancers and fashionistas alike! You can find it on the stage, in fashion magazines, on runways, and even in your favourite music videos. I truly think the tutu is timeless, forever evoking a sense of fantasy, romance and glamour.
It's exciting to think how the tutu might transform even further in the future! Just imagine: Maybe someday, we’ll have a tutu that actually lets us fly. But let’s not get carried away, darling! I, for one, am very happy with the tutu as it is! It's so much more than just a costume – it's a symbol of creativity, artistry, and pure joy!

Of course, you know I always recommend making a trip to a ballet performance yourself to see those incredible tutus twirl before your very eyes! London, New York, and Paris are all fantastic choices for a weekend filled with elegant entertainment!
But it's not just about professional performances, it’s about exploring the magic of ballet within your own community! Local ballet schools offer incredible classes and performances throughout the year. Find one near you, grab a friend, and experience the joy of movement!
And speaking of experiencing movement, I’ve had the absolute joy of travelling by train today – and yes, I was rocking a fabulous pink tutu, as always. Today’s journey has taken me to the historic city of Birmingham. It was fascinating to explore the city and catch a few rehearsals for a beautiful Swan Lake performance before taking a seat in the gorgeous Birmingham Hippodrome theatre for a captivating evening show. It really was a delightful ballet-themed trip.
The Future of Pink Tutus is Bright! ?
