#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2031-12-23

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina!

This week, my sparkly little time machine has taken me all the way back to the festive season of 2031!

This time of year is simply magical - all those twinkly lights, the joyous music, and, of course, the most incredible array of tutus! Today, I thought it would be lovely to chat a bit about how those stunning tutus evolved. And who better to tell the story than your own tutu-clad guide to the history of fashion?!

So, where did the tutu originate? Well, ballet's big sisters - the Opera and the Ballet - began evolving back in the 17th and 18th centuries in glorious France, and guess what? That’s where our humble tutu had its debut.

While those very first ballerinas wore lovely flowing dresses, they had some practicality issues, right? Not ideal for showing off your spins and leaps! So, in the early 19th century, the innovative Marie Taglioni, a revolutionary ballerina, shortened those dresses, allowing for those beautiful swirling movements, bringing us closer to the modern-day tutu. Now we're talking!

But the real magic happened when we transitioned to the Romantic era of ballet - a time that's as synonymous with tutu history as, well, tutus! This is when, around 1841, a dancer named Carlotta Grisi, stepped out onto the stage and set the ballet world on fire by sporting that new kind of tutu, known as the Romantic tutu - all romantic, soft and delicate! With the flowing multiple layers, they moved beautifully, creating the essence of that romantic, airy style we all adore.

Oh, but you know us, girls! We don't just wear tutus on stage, we live them! By the early 20th century, we saw our love for this beautiful dancewear expand to our streets and even into high fashion. The modern, streamlined and streamlined Classical Tutu we wear for class and performance began its rise as designers looked at the stage and drew inspiration, designing for the streets.

Think iconic looks like Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Givenchy. Those fashion giants understood what the tutu was all about - femininity, grace, elegance. It's that dreamlike quality, right?! The way the layers and fabric billow so beautifully, capturing the essence of effortless elegance. No wonder the tutu is a forever fashion symbol!

Today's tutus come in so many beautiful shapes, sizes, and colours, just like me, darling! We have everything, from the full-bodied and romantic tutus that are like something straight from a fairy tale, to the shorter, more practical tutus you wear for everyday training. I adore finding that perfect, delicate tulle that can capture the light just right. And did I mention all the sparkly variations?!

Today, I just took a look around this fantastic vintage clothing emporium. It’s on a cobbled street with an old fashioned Victorian design - so enchanting. Just the place for the discerning fashionista looking for those timeless classics! Oh, and darling, guess what? I found this incredible 1960s pink tutu for my collection, you have to see it! It's going straight back to my time machine - I just had to bring a touch of vintage glamour back with me!
