#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History on 2032-04-20

Greetings, my darling tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu aficionado, popping in from a time travelling adventure, ready to share another delightful tidbit of tutu history with you all. Today's date? April 20th, 2032, and my, oh my, are you in for a treat!

But first, let me just tell you about my thrilling train journey. It was one of those magical experiences where the world whizzed by, and every clickety-clack was music to my ears. Oh, I simply adore travelling by train! So, imagine my excitement when I stepped off the carriage into the heart of… wait for it… New York City! This fabulous metropolis just exudes a certain je ne sais quoi, and as soon as I set foot on its streets, I felt the creative energy buzz in the air.

Speaking of buzzing, today is World Ballet Day, an international celebration of this stunning art form! This annual event is held in April, and you bet your pink tutu I wouldn’t miss it! The world unites in a love for ballet – I am thrilled! But what truly made today exceptional? The world premiere of “Celestial Swan,” an absolutely mesmerising ballet performance at the New York City Ballet. The music, the costumes, the dancers – everything was simply exquisite. And of course, as always, I had to indulge in a spot of window shopping in the fabulous boutiques that grace New York's avenues. But the real star of the show? A magnificent powder pink tutu with intricate layers and shimmering sequins! Sigh… I almost felt like buying it but then thought – surely there is a future Emma who deserves a dress this spectacular!

Now, let's travel back in time a bit. What do you imagine was the first tutu to grace the stage?

Perhaps a flimsy petticoat fashioned from netting, a gauzy layer that allowed for effortless leaps and pirouettes? Actually, no! Believe it or not, the first tutu wasn’t all that… tutu-rific, actually. It wasn’t about movement and grace but about concealing the legs and shaping the body! The ladies back then – oh my – would have been suffocating!

So, how did this incredible garment evolve?

It all began in the 18th century, where fashion trends heavily influenced stage attire. Ladies’ gowns at the time were heavy and impractical. Imagine twirling in those massive creations! What about the classic, perfectly proportioned Romantic tutu, crafted from layers of tulle that create a breathtaking illusion of softness and movement. A real, head-turning “ooh-la-la!” look. This style still reigns supreme on the modern ballet stage. And what a vision! They’re still beautiful today!
