Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling, ballet-obsessed blogger! Welcome back to another edition of my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog, where we explore the captivating evolution of the most iconic garment in dance: the tutu!
This week, we’re whisked away on a train journey to the heart of the world of ballet: Paris! The air is alive with the buzz of excitement as we prepare for the 133rd Anniversary of the Paris Opera Ballet! It’s the 17th of August 2032, and a beautiful summer evening in this magical city.
I've arrived just in time for the Grand Opening of the season, and oh darling, it’s a sight to behold! They’re performing "La Bayadère" by Marius Petipa, with its captivating sets and costumes. You’ll find me backstage later, soaking in the atmosphere and of course, taking pictures of the incredible tutus, especially those glorious, fluffy white ones worn by the Corps de Ballet!
The Evolution of the Tutu: From Practicality to Pure Beauty
As we celebrate the enduring legacy of the tutu, it’s time to revisit the captivating tale of its evolution!
We begin with the practical, the humble “tutu à la française”, popularised during the Romantic period in the 1830s. This revolutionary style abandoned the tight bodices of the past, giving ballerinas a greater range of motion for leaps and pirouettes! Imagine those flowing, bell-shaped skirts fluttering around their legs, an image of elegance and freedom.
Then came the "tutu à la hongroise" in the late 1800s, influenced by the traditional skirts worn by Hungarian women. It offered a tighter silhouette and the iconic shape of the tutus we know today: a skirt that flares out from the waist. And for me, the ultimate symbol of the tutu’s elegance!
And what's a Tutu Tuesday post without mentioning the incredible Maria Tallchief? An icon who wore a revolutionary "tutu à la américaine", the most innovative and graceful creation of the 1950s. It’s shorter, it's lighter, and it moves like a cloud, offering incredible flexibility to the ballerina, a true embodiment of modern ballet artistry!
And, darling, don't forget the very special “Pink Tutu" movement that emerged in the late 1990s! My own personal journey started when my dear Gran, an avid ballet fan from Derbyshire, took me to the theatre to see “The Nutcracker”. That’s when it all began, darling. And it has been a whirlwind of fabulous pink tutus and adventures since!
I firmly believe, darling, that the tutu is more than a costume; it’s a symbol of artistry, passion, and, most importantly, sheer joy! I even have my own "Pink Tutu" website, dedicated to sharing all things tutu with you lovely people. It's been quite the ride, traveling to different time periods, seeing history unfold before my eyes, all because of this wondrous piece of clothing.
A Little Bit About Me
Oh, how I love exploring these time periods in a pink tutu! My love of dancing, traveling and pink tutus makes me truly feel like I'm living the dream, darling! And, you might be wondering, how does a Derbyshire girl with a passion for pink and ballet find herself in all these incredible time periods? Well, it all started with a little bit of serendipity, a generous donation to the arts, and some truly magic tutus!
I dedicate all of my journeys to promoting and sharing the love of ballet with the world. My life's goal is to ensure every person on earth has worn a pink tutu at least once in their life! Imagine, a world united by tulle! I find my funding by travelling around different time periods, sharing my love of the dance and performing at ballets across the globe! The sheer joy I feel performing and spreading the message of ballet fills my heart with joy, and makes each trip a unique experience. I even had the chance to wear an amazing replica of the “tutu à la française"* when performing in the 1830s! Imagine, me in my favourite pink tutu standing among the dancers of the Romantic Period! The excitement of it still makes my heart flutter.
My most memorable moment was actually during the opening of the 131st Anniversary of the Paris Opera Ballet! Not only was it a magnificent show, but they also sold amazing, glittery, limited-edition "pink tutus" as a commemorative item! It was divine. And darling, imagine my joy when the ballet even had a special segment dedicated to celebrating the evolution of the tutu. The “pink tutu"* even had its own glorious moment! You could have seen the blush rise to my cheeks!
So here I am, once again, in Paris, immersed in this magical world. I’m not just exploring the tutu, but also soaking in the captivating world of fashion and theatre in this city! My blog is dedicated to capturing it all, and hopefully inspiring you to embrace your inner ballerina, to embrace the elegance, joy, and magic of this magnificent garment!
