Kendal Calling! Pink Tutu Sparkles Takes on the Lake District

Hiya darlings! Welcome to Pink Tutu Sparkles’ fabulous blog, where every day’s a celebration of glitter, tutus, and all things pink! Today’s post is a little special, number 1002 for this fabulous lady - I can't believe we've been doing this for over two years! So, grab a cuppa and settle in for a delightful read about my trip to Kendal.

Now, you might be wondering, “Why Kendal, Pink Tutu? Doesn’t that sound… well, a bit muddy?” And you’re absolutely right! Kendal’s known for its stunning scenery, the Lake District, and all those rambly walks, but let's be real, a pink tutu and rugged mountains don’t quite scream “match made in heaven” now, do they?

But then again, this is Pink Tutu Sparkles! The girl who wears a shimmering pink tutu to science conferences (don’t judge - I get loads of compliments, even from the old boys in lab coats!) and dances like a fairy princess while testing the fire resistance of fabric samples. It’s about breaking boundaries, finding the sparkle in unexpected places.

So, when I found out Kendal was hosting a huge fair with arts, crafts, and live music, I knew this was my kinda scene! A weekend of dancing, dazzling, and inspiring people to embrace their inner sparkle!

Now, the journey there was truly epic. Imagine this, darling: a beautiful Victorian railway carriage, complete with plush velvet seats, me sitting there looking fabulous in a hot pink dress, with a delicate tulle tutu billowing around me, my face glowing with my signature pink blush and lipstick! All I needed was a little banjo music to truly set the scene, but sadly the train only offered some questionable 90’s pop tunes!

(To be fair, I did serenade the fellow passengers with a short impromptu performance of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ – I've learned over the years that even the most stoic commuter needs a little bit of Pink Tutu magic!)

The Kendal Fair was everything I hoped for and more! It was a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors, smells, and sounds - a real feast for the senses. From artisans displaying hand-crafted jewellery to live music bursting with energy, I felt totally alive.

There was also a whole area dedicated to vintage clothing! It’s like a drag queen’s paradise - I lost myself in the racks, picking out beautiful, sparkling garments, each with its own unique story to tell. The shopkeeper was so delighted when he saw me waltz into the shop, tu-tu billowing like a puff of pink smoke. He told me about his time selling clothes in Covent Garden - you could tell he was a real theatrical soul. He even helped me find the perfect pair of shoes: a gorgeous silver sequined ballet flat!

But let’s be honest, I’m a little biased toward all things vintage. They just have so much more soul than clothes you find on the high street. Speaking of high street, I found a shop filled with fluffy tutus and gorgeous sparkly clothes - and not a hint of cynicism about a grown woman dressed in a tutu. They even had a lovely shade of pale pink they called “tutu time” - it’s definitely a new shade for my colour palette. The best part was a tiny tiara shop next door, offering an incredible selection of little sparkly crown jewels. Now you're talking!

Now, no visit to Kendal would be complete without seeing a ballet show! And luckily, the local theatre was presenting a rendition of Swan Lake. Seeing a professional ballet in full performance truly takes my breath away. I don't think I can explain it to those who have never seen it, it's like watching poetry come alive, an incredibly beautiful form of storytelling where emotions are expressed in body language, rather than dialogue. I'll admit it, the performance brought a tear to my eye (yes, even pink tutus get sentimental!).

I ended the day dancing at the Kendal Jazz Club - my rendition of "Singing in the Rain" with my sequinned shoes kicked up a little dust (and perhaps a bit of laughter). They even had a dedicated 'Pink Tutu' cocktail! (Pink lemonade with a dash of glitter, served with a tiny feather boa, of course.) It truly is the perfect way to end a fantastic day.

Overall, my journey to Kendal was everything I had hoped for. It was a wonderful experience full of colour, laughter, and new discoveries. And, of course, I’ve already convinced a few new souls to wear a tutu, so mission accomplished! Now, if you excuse me, darling, I need to go pack my bags, my next adventure awaits, and it involves an adorable pink tutu that I’ve just discovered online, waiting to join my collection...
