I'm not gonna lie, Kensington has been on my bucket list for ages. You know, a proper "London experience" - red buses, iconic landmarks, the whole shebang! And naturally, I had to make the journey in style - I mean, what's a drag queen without a bit of drama, right? 😉
This time, I swapped the train for something a little more unique - a carriage ride! Now, hear me out, it wasn't just any horse-drawn carriage. It was all decked out in pink, darling! Talk about matching your outfit to your travel mode! 🤭 It was so fancy, I almost felt like Cinderella! But let's be real, I wasn't waiting for a prince, I was here for a good old-fashioned Kensington extravaganza! ✨
Now, you might think a trip to Kensington would just involve strolling through Hyde Park, admiring the palace, and maybe stopping for afternoon tea. But not this Pink Tutu Sparkles! No siree! 😉 I had a plan, a tutu-tastic plan.
Kensington Palace: A Royal Tutu Affair 👑
First on the agenda was Kensington Palace itself! As you all know, I have a thing for tutus, and you just know there had to be a tutu connection with a royal residence, right? And boy, was I right!
Imagine my joy when I stumbled upon a little exhibit all about the history of ballet costumes! Now, this wasn't just any ordinary collection - it featured vintage tutus worn by some of the most iconic ballerinas of all time! We're talking serious history here! It was a tutu-lover's dream come true. I actually spent almost an hour there, simply mesmerized.
And let's not forget about the palace itself. You wouldn't believe the sheer size of it! Imagine all the fabulous parties that must have been held there over the years. It's all very well having a beautiful palace, but it needs the right attire to truly make an impact. Just think about how many tutus could have graced its hallways... swoon! ✨
Royal Ballet School: Tutu-ing Around
But Kensington wasn't just about palaces and history! I was on a mission to experience the very best of the local ballet scene, and there was no better place to do it than the Royal Ballet School!
You see, darling, ever since that life-changing moment when I tried on my first tutu for charity while studying science (yes, I was a bit of a science nerd!), I've been absolutely hooked. Ballet classes, shows, you name it - I'm in! I find such a deep sense of peace in the movement, the artistry, the discipline. And there's nothing quite like seeing those beautiful tutus in motion! 🤩
Now, the Royal Ballet School is a hallowed ground, the place where young, talented dancers hone their skills, learning to perfect those beautiful moves and perfecting their performance art. I couldn't just look at it, darling. I had to try it out for myself!
So, after a bit of (okay, a lot of) persuasion, I managed to get myself a private ballet class. A proper, old-school lesson with an experienced teacher! I wasn't expecting a dance prodigy to emerge from the class, I'm a scientist, not a prima ballerina. But it was fun! Fun and totally pink! Don't worry, my fellow tutu enthusiasts - it all went smoothly - with lots of giggling and some slightly awkward poses, and I got a great understanding of the grace, skill, and passion that goes into becoming a ballet star. It definitely cemented my admiration for ballet dancers. Their strength, their resilience and that artistic focus was seriously inspiring. 🩰✨
Tutu-licious Treat Time
But no trip to Kensington is complete without a proper afternoon tea! It's a British tradition after all! Now, a girl as fashionable as me couldn't possibly go to just any cafe, no, I had to find somewhere that understood my love for pink and, you guessed it, tutus! 😄
The perfect spot was a darling little bakery I discovered just around the corner from the palace. They had pink macarons and pink lemonade, and, drumroll please... pink tutus! Wait... what? Yes! They had a whole collection of tutus for sale! The staff had dressed up a life-size mannequin in one, which naturally caused a little scene with the tourists. I told them the queen is just a big fan of pink tutus - you can imagine the reaction... 😉
So I indulged in a delightful array of pink treats and a tutu to wear as I walked around Kensington! Because really, darling, what's better than a pink tutu? Absolutely nothing. 💕
Kensington's Sparkling Pink Light
By the time the evening rolled around, I was ready to unleash my inner diva. So, I headed to a little cabaret club nestled away on a side street in Kensington. It was called the "Starlight Stage," which sounded a bit too fancy for my taste. I suggested they rename it the "Tutu Twilight" instead. Sadly they weren't so receptive to my proposal. 😭 But luckily, I had a fabulous time nevertheless. 😉 I went full-on Pink Tutu Sparkles - bright pink everything - glittery eye shadow, my favourite sparkly pink tutu, the whole shebang! The audience was loving it!
The stage was so sparkly! And I made a real effort for my Kensington audience. I included some London-themed twists to my act, including some "Kensington Royal" jokes, (no spoilers on those... just saying... 😂). All in all, it was a spectacular night!
As I made my way back to the carriage at the end of my performance, I felt a real sense of accomplishment. It was one of those trips where it just felt right, you know? All that pink and glitter, those delightful dancers and the amazing audiences I performed for, It was like my tutu dreams had finally come true! ✨
The Power of Pink (and Tutu) in Kensington
So, my journey to Kensington, my lovely tutu enthusiasts, was much more than a simple visit. It was a journey to embrace my inner queen and the magic of this truly special place. Kensington, in all its elegance and sophistication, offered up the perfect backdrop for a pink tutu princess! 💕

Now, as I sit down to write this blog post from my quiet Derbyshire flat, surrounded by all my pink things - (a little tutu obsessed I know! - but it's not a bad thing) I am feeling so incredibly grateful for my life as Pink Tutu Sparkles. I wouldn't trade this adventure, this love for the colour pink, for all the sequins in the world! And neither would I trade the love I have for my fellow tutu enthusiasts, you are the reason I write, dance and perform!
