Now, as you know, I love to travel. I wouldn’t be surprised if you think I’m one of those glamorous divas who flit around in a private jet, but honestly? Trains are my absolute best friend. They let you see the world while relaxing in a comfy seat (sometimes even with a delightful picnic basket, ahem). Plus, I find train journeys surprisingly calming. Perfect time for a nap, some serious people-watching, or a little pre-show prep. You know, getting the makeup just right, maybe practising a new spin or twirl. 💅
But this time, Hornchurch was calling. Not by train, oh no! A rather lovely, muscular gentleman with a lovely, bright pink tutu of his own decided that a good, old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage would be the perfect way to get us to our destination. Quite frankly, I wouldn't say no to that! What’s more fabulous than arriving at a theatre in a carriage? Pure magic! ✨
Hornchurch is such a delightful little place! The cobblestone streets, the cute little shops... the energy just makes you want to burst out into a twirl or two! I especially adore the vintage stores, you wouldn’t believe the gorgeous silk scarves and sequined gowns I found! Perfect for that little extra sparkle on a special night out. I actually picked up a pair of sequined leggings, pink of course, to match the magnificent tutu I’m wearing today for my performance. It was a little splurge, but oh my, does it feel luxurious!
I had been booked for an incredible show, it's all a blur of feathers, sequins and glitz. But my act? That’s a different story. A performance is like a secret code I can decode with just a flash of my pink tutu. My stage persona just makes everything so much fun, it's all about expressing my love for dance, fashion, and just pure sparkly joy. Even if it’s just for a couple of hours a night, Pink Tutu Sparkles reminds me that we should always embrace our inner, dazzling diva!
Now, you may wonder how this girl, Alex in her everyday clothes, a modest science graduate from the wilds of Derbyshire, morphed into Pink Tutu Sparkles. Well, it all started with a charity event in the university ballet club, and a daring attempt to try on a pink tutu for the first time. I didn’t plan it, I swear, it just...happened. That beautiful twirl in the fluffy, pink garment and my transformation was set in motion! Who knew, eh? Now I have this big passion for tutus! The world needs more pink tutus. There are tutus out there just waiting to be worn! You don't need to be a ballet dancer to wear one. It’s all about being brave and spreading some sunshine and love. That’s the true magic of a pink tutu!
And what is it like to be Pink Tutu Sparkles by night and a science whizz by day? Frankly, I just love the contrast. There’s nothing quite like escaping to the lab and getting absorbed in research for my day job, all about fabric testing and the finer points of material science. My favourite moment of the day? Finding new techniques to get those materials shimmering, just like a sequined garment.
The world of fabrics and the world of dance may seem far apart, but really? There’s so much overlap. Take ballet, for example. Think of all the different textures of the fabrics used in costumes! The satin, the tulle, the lace - each brings a unique character and texture to a dancer's movement. It's all about finding the perfect fabric to showcase a story, much like how I find the perfect outfit for my performance. It's a fun, glamorous adventure that I’m thrilled to share with the world through this very blog.
You may see a tutu and assume it’s frivolous. I say: it’s magic, pure, simple, beautiful magic. Every time I put one on, it feels like the world opens up with possibility and joy! And you know what, it’s not just about the tutu. It’s about the confidence that comes with being comfortable in your own skin, however sparkly it might be! 💕
