Cambridge: Tutu Travels #6489

Oh darling, it’s been a whirl! This fabulous pink-tutu-wearing diva just travelled to Cambridge. Think: cobbled streets, historic colleges, and enough pinks to rival a flamingo festival. Honestly, you wouldn't believe the number of shops boasting pink teacups and fuchsia floral fabrics – a perfect playground for my colour-obsessed soul!

It all started with a whisper – a frantic message from my dear friend Poppy, the owner of the enchanting 'Rose Petal Boutique'. "Dearest Tutu Queen, we need you! The Cambridge Rose Ball is happening next Saturday, and your presence is vital, darling!''

Of course, my pink-loving heart skipped a beat. You see, Cambridge holds a special place in my tutu-wearing heart. I was here in 2017, when I first felt the real buzz of a stage under my sparkly shoes. That time, I had just popped over from London, where I'd been performing at a theatre for their yearly "Fairytale Weekend". Performing to such an enthusiastic, engaged audience, especially children, lit my spark!

It’s hard to believe I’m Alex during the day, a humble scientist in a fabric-testing laboratory. Working in a lab is not as glamourous as I'd imagine; though, it does come in handy for all things glitter and embellishment! I remember starting the journey of ‘Pink Tutu Sparkles’ as I studied for a science degree, getting into the university’s ballet club. After their annual charity fundraising show, we all went for a celebratory meal. One of the girls had a pink tulle skirt on. On a whim, I borrowed it – put it on and … that was that! My entire life turned a shocking shade of pink.

Now, I must admit, Cambridge does seem to attract the finest gentlemen – particularly in a charming, bookish, well-dressed sense! Imagine my delight when my dear friend Poppy presented me with a tiny, antique teapot – it's a lovely light shade of pink with floral detail – I shall use it for special occasions, like the most divine English Breakfast teas. My luggage always includes my teapot!

But back to Cambridge and the Rose Ball! My fellow pink enthusiast Poppy had orchestrated a beautiful spectacle in a private garden, a secret haven tucked away from the city's hustle. Imagine roses in shades of pink – every colour imaginable: from the delicate blushing rose to the deepest, rich burgundy. It was, simply put, 'utterly charming'.

Before entering the Rose Ball, I spent a rather long time picking the perfect tutu. Ultimately, I chose my pale blush, five-layered tulle creation, the one that perfectly shimmers under the stage lights. The moment I arrived at the ballroom, everyone was taken aback – it was a genuine love at first sight. A collective gasp followed by delighted murmurs. Even the gentleman who seemed a tad old for me took out his vintage handkerchief, dabbed his brow and complimented me, 'Why, I haven't seen such a delightful vision in all of my 75 years!” It is always a compliment when you are deemed a charming ‘vision’ to an older gent!

And then, the show began. Poppy was the hostess – simply dazzling in her bright pink tulle dress – I had a special cameo performance in the center of the ballroom. Imagine a dozen gentlemen vying to ask me for the first waltz; I could not pick, I opted to share my graceful waltz steps with them all!

The gentlemanly attire – top hats, velvet suits, polished shoes! The waltz and the gentle swish of my tulle tutu… all these came together, blending seamlessly in a wonderful harmony. I think I was in a bit of a trance by this point, dancing to "My Fair Lady" as everyone danced in circles and swirls.

Of course, I brought a gift for my darling friend. A unique rose print dress. She put it on at once, twirling in delight and looking every inch the 'Pink Tutu Sparkles' fan, so beautifully flamboyant! I have a knack for finding the perfect gifts.

But here’s a secret: Cambridge also captivated me with its more earthy charm. This town is a world of contrast – ancient stone, and vibrant green foliage and even some wonderfully whimsical graffiti that perfectly reflected my Pink Tutu aesthetic. My darling friend, Poppy, knows exactly where to go when in Cambridge: The Rose Petal Boutique is just a five-minute stroll from a lovely horse-riding stable tucked behind the bustling Cambridge market! I am an expert rider, you know; after all, in my early 20s I lived on a farm and loved nothing better than an invigorating, early-morning trot through the fields. Cambridge had the same magical green fields. So of course, after performing for Poppy, I had to try my hand at a ride – on a beautiful grey horse! Poppy was delighted to lend me one of her own!

One final thought, as you may have gleaned, I am a massive fan of ballet – from the big stage performances to small ‘Ballet Street’ classes. And while exploring the Cambridge Market, I found a truly extraordinary shop with antique items and art objects – including an original lithograph print by Edgar Degas, titled "The Ballet Class" – just stunning, you see, with a dancer wearing a gorgeous, voluminous tutu that reminded me of my ballet lessons in Derbyshire!

For the time being, my pink tutus remain folded neatly in my suitcase, waiting to take centre stage at my next location! If you ever see me around town, do say hello! I am all for promoting positive self-expression. Why, you never know what tutu creation you might find me sporting – after all, a good day always begins and ends with a pink tutu!
