Today, I'm beaming back at you from the charming city of Leicester. It's my first visit here, and oh my, the place is just buzzing! From the moment I arrived at the train station (a fabulously gothic structure I must say!), I felt a magical energy that could only be explained by an abundance of pink tutus hidden beneath those charming Georgian streets. I mean, just imagine - a city that truly embraces its inner tulle!
Now, Leicester, you know how much I love my travel adventures, right? But you might be surprised to hear that my preferred mode of transportation, aside from the glamorous bus journeys that always have a fabulous soundtrack of diva hits playing on my headphones, is the mighty railway! There’s just something about the romantic puffing and clinking of a steam engine that gets me in the mood for exploring new cities and dreaming of all the amazing venues that will soon be graced with my tutu-clad presence. This train journey was no exception. In fact, I had my very own personal, dedicated seat - an indulgence for sure! It made me think, “Why don't they do that on all train journeys, a tutu seat for all the divas?” Imagine the elegance!
But enough about the journey. This is a story about a glamorous destination! Leicester welcomed me with open arms (and open theatres, thank goodness!) The sheer number of stunning theaters that are tucked away in this gorgeous city just blew me away. My trip was already overflowing with a mix of fabulous ballet and street theatre, oh, and some fabulous drag events, of course. Oh my word, there was simply so much pink to go around - almost enough to make me speechless!
I was drawn to a very beautiful, ornate theatre, just around the corner from my hotel. I mean, who needs a “room with a view” when you have a “theatre with a dazzling entrance”!? They welcomed me in, gave me a special guided tour of the building, and then the very next day they let me into a gorgeous rehearsal space. Well, needless to say, that tutu-wearing queen simply had to showcase her skills with a short and sweet little pirouette for the stage hands and staff. They all loved it, and for a fleeting moment I felt I could almost teach those theatrical wonders the true meaning of fabulous.
Talking of rehearsals, you all know I absolutely adore my ballet. It’s my happy place! I could twirl and twirl all day long. Now, this trip brought me the absolute treat of getting to see a ballet class with a difference. Imagine, an outdoor ballet studio set against a magnificent medieval castle with breathtaking countryside as its backdrop! This, my darlings, was ballet with a touch of historical elegance that only England can offer.
Here are some fun facts that I uncovered in my Leicester adventure:
- The most charming tea room: nestled in a lovely garden setting with tea and scones and… pink ribbons on every teacup. What more could a drag queen ask for?
- The most amazing vintage clothes shop: You know I love a bit of shopping (or shall I say shopping in style?), and in Leicester, I hit a treasure trove of incredible, sparkly, colorful clothes! Enough said!
- The kindest, friendliest people: Let me tell you, the locals were simply the warmest bunch, ready to chat, laugh, and share stories. It made my journey extra special.
But of course, it wouldn’t be a trip by Pink Tutu Sparkles without a drag show to dazzle the audiences! The city just screamed "Pink Tutu Sparkles!" for this weekend, and I truly lived up to the moment! Performing to a crowded pub with locals ready to embrace the tutu-filled fabulousness, made for a truly heartwarming experience. And let’s not forget the delicious food at the venue afterwards… I swear, my heart is made of cake and sequins!
