Oh my gosh, you guys, this place is simply divine. It's like stepping back in time, with charming cobbled streets, adorable cafes and oh-so-chic boutiques. The air is alive with the chirping of birds, and the scent of blooming roses wafts through the air – what more could a girl ask for?
But I'm not here for a cup of tea and a scone, darlings! (Although those do sound lovely). I’m here on a mission. A mission to bring the power of pink tutus to Hampstead. I know what you’re thinking: tutus in Hampstead? Sounds wild! But just imagine the possibilities. A pink tutu flitting past the iconic Kenwood House… the sheer brilliance of a tutu-wearing barista at a local café… why, it would be a dream come true!
Before we dive into all the adventures of Pink Tutu Sparkles in Hampstead, I just want to say, darling, my journey here was truly magical. A gentle clip-clop ride through the English countryside on a trusty steed… wait, scratch that! I forgot to mention I'm in full drag today, and a galloping horse just isn't feasible for a tutu. So I took the train, of course, because trains are fabulous! It was a whirlwind ride through rolling hills and sleepy villages, my pink tulle billowing majestically with the wind. A truly spectacular spectacle, I assure you!
I arrived in Hampstead with a mission. I wanted to experience its vibrant art scene, so I did what any respectable tutu-clad drag queen would do: I sashayed right into the heart of Hampstead Theatre. They have the most amazing productions on, with everything from classic Shakespeare to edgy contemporary works. Honestly, darlings, I was mesmerised by the talent on stage. The energy, the emotion, the sheer joy of performance… it was infectious! And the tutus, darlings? They were simply chef’s kiss. Now, it may not be exactly a Pink Tutu Sparkles tutu, but it was a start! (My vision of seeing pink tutus at Hampstead Theatre remains very much alive!).
After my theatrical immersion, I decided to embark on a journey of discovery, exploring the charming boutiques and galleries that line Hampstead’s picturesque streets. Honestly, my darling, the amount of fantastic vintage shops was mind-blowing. Each shop had so many treasures. You know I adore clothes shopping, so it was basically a dream come true. I felt like I had stumbled into a wonderland of bright colors and playful patterns! Imagine my joy at discovering the most gorgeous pink tutu tucked away on the top shelf in a hidden gem of a vintage boutique. Of course, I had to add it to my ever-growing collection of tulle masterpieces.
And then there was the food, darlings, oh the food! From cozy cafes brimming with the scent of freshly baked cakes to chic bistros serving up delectable French fare, Hampstead’s culinary scene is a delectable delight. The local bakery just had to have the most incredible pink frosting. Honestly, they should be putting up Michelin stars for their cupcakes.
However, my mission for a tutu in every window was not achieved yet. I needed to go to the ballet. But my darling, Hampstead had no ballet class available at my schedule - I am just that popular. Luckily, there’s the amazing Sadler's Wells Theatre, just down the road. So I headed down on a double decker bus (so retro, darling!), all set to see the amazing ballet company "English National Ballet" perform! Oh my gosh, the choreography was sublime, the dancers’ precision was breathtaking, and the costumes... sigh, my heart fluttered. Even I have to admit it’s hard to top an expertly constructed professional ballet tutu. They are basically the high-end Chanel of tutus. But just you wait… my Pink Tutu Sparkles design skills are becoming famous, I am designing a pink tutu for the most fashionable people in Derbyshire soon. The news will spread faster than gossip in a girls’ convent school - Pink Tutu Sparkles in the Derby Telegraph! I can see the headlines now, darling… (I really can’t see the headlines, as they haven’t actually been printed, but I imagine they would be something sensational!).
The entire day has been truly unforgettable, my darlings. It’s hard to believe that I spent the afternoon exploring Hampstead's vibrant charm while my day job is back in Derbyshire working in the lab… yes, I’m a scientist. By day, I'm immersed in the world of chemicals and formulas. By night, I’m Pink Tutu Sparkles, bringing joy to the world with my infectious pinkness and a fabulous dose of glitter. My lab life can sometimes get boring… It involves analysing fabrics. For the most part, it’s rather humdrum, darling. However, the whole point of analysing fabric is that I can know exactly what my pink tutus will be made from. After all, my darling, even a Pink Tutu Sparkles must understand the science of the perfectly designed pink tutu, you know!
However, in my time in Hampstead, the sparkle never faded! As a drag artist, it’s not so much about how much you spend, it’s all about the effort and confidence you bring to the table. Even if it is only an outfit. Even if that outfit is a fabulous tutu. My tutus, even the vintage ones, really do speak for themselves!
Hampstead, you truly are a magical place, and I will be back for more adventures, more tutus, more inspiration! (And let's not forget the cake... there’s never enough cake!).
