Barnet: Tutu-tastic Time Travels! ?✨?

Hello darlings! It’s your favourite Pink Tutu Sparkles here, ready to whisk you away to the wonderous world of…well, tutus! ?

This is post number 9693 for your fabulous Pink Tutu queen and it’s a special one! Today, my loves, we're taking a little trip to the vibrant town of Barnet! That’s right, a jaunt away from Derbyshire and right into the heart of…wait for it…another beautiful, tutu-tastic town! ?

Barnet was my first stop on this, my latest whirlwind tour. You know I always prefer a train journey. The wind whipping through your hair, the smell of steam… It just sets the mood for fabulousness! Plus, I always pack my pink tutu, just in case, and can guarantee it'll always attract a smile on a crowded train carriage.

Arriving in Barnet, I immediately felt the warm charm of this beautiful place. The sun was shining, the birds were singing…well, okay maybe it wasn't actually birds singing, it was probably just the sound of construction and roadworks (I can be very easily distracted by any happy noises!). The air felt like…well, like…joy! And this town seemed like a place that really knew how to have a good time, just like us!

This time, my dear dears, my reason for being in Barnet wasn’t simply a spot of fashion inspiration, but a very special event! The annual Barnet Dance Festival. It's like the most fantastic combination of theatre, dance, and…you guessed it…sparkly tutus! I had heard whispers of this magical gathering and I couldn’t possibly miss it!

I must confess, the sight of all those talented dancers prancing around, twirling in all those beautiful tutus… I was like a kid in a candy shop, overwhelmed with happiness! Honestly, it was enough to make any drag queen weak at the knees!

I must also confess, while my dancing is fabulous…you see, I’m no prima ballerina. I leave those fancy moves to the professionals! It takes a lot of work to twirl perfectly. Trust me, I tried for months but decided that being fabulous and unique was a far better option! But who wouldn’t be tempted, surrounded by so much passion and grace, with the joy of every twirl just electrifying the air. It’s honestly infectious! And guess what…it sparked an idea! ?

You know me, I’m always coming up with plans. So here’s the scoop. This time around, it’s not about a grand performance, no…This time, it’s all about you! Yes, I’ve decided to start a little Tutu Challenge…and guess who I'd love to have join in on the fun? YOU, my dearest tutu lovers! That’s right, I'm challenging everyone out there to take a twirl in a pink tutu!

It's not just about the dress, it’s about the joy, the sparkle, the magic. You can take a picture of you dancing on your balcony, or even in your living room, or in your kitchen (don’t get it on the biscuit tin!), you can even make a video of yourself showing off your moves. Don't forget, just remember to tag it with #PinkTutuChallenge! I want to see your stories! And who knows, maybe one day I’ll pick you to join me on stage.

Barnet, it’s a place that embraced my flamboyant pinkness, it really resonated with me, with every inch of my sparkly existence.

But before we dive into all things pink, a little personal journey into the heart of how Pink Tutu Sparkles came to be!

As I sit here in the grand hotel suite (well, I don’t really have my own butler, I just think that's the ideal life. Maybe when I become even more successful…!), the memory of my own aha! moment plays in my head. It’s such a long way from the science lab to the grand stage! But then again, maybe not… It was an experiment, after all!

You see, darling, it was while I was busy trying to understand the secrets of chemistry and biology (those weren’t quite the ingredients for the success of a drag queen!) at a university tucked away in Derbyshire, when I saw a call for volunteers for the uni’s ballet club. Aha! The opportunity was calling, even though the only ballet experience I had was pretending to be a swan while dancing to a 80s record in my room at home! ?

At first, I’d just hang back, watch, be impressed. The dancing was mesmerizing! It really captured the magic of life in motion…Then the idea of trying out this wonderful new hobby…well, it completely caught me! But I still hesitated. That fear that everyone has before stepping into the unknown, I can only call it… stage fright.

”What if it's not for me? I’ll probably just stand there like a gawk, awkward in my two left feet!”

”Oh…Alex, maybe try again. Look at the beautiful patterns that the dancers’ dresses make when they spin…how graceful and elegant they are…

Those little whispers… you know the kind I mean. The ones that talk to us deep down. They told me: ”You know you are gonna love it! Do it, try it! Jump into the big pool! But don’t just sit by the edge, jump in with both feet, head first!”

So that’s what I did, I dove headfirst into the heart of it! And my dearest darlings, I was truly surprised and delighted! There was this special day, a day the ballet club put on a little charity fashion show! I signed up just to do a quick cameo…just one scene in this grand dance theatre… and there I was…on that big stage! You would not believe it! In a pink tutu…It wasn't one of the fancy ones from the professionals but you would not believe the joy that radiated off of it. A beautiful pink… just like mine. ? It was light, ethereal, and it moved with me, dancing like it knew its own moves! It felt absolutely fabulous. I was the one gawking, looking in awe…

After a little while, it happened…this sort of “clicking” feeling. That moment when everything seems to click into place… And it wasn’t just because I loved the pink tutu, oh no! It was something more…

As I stood on the stage, performing for those who had come to witness our dancing, something truly magical happened. And I thought, ”I can really do this! Maybe I should put this pink tutu on, give it another try. After all, life is about experimenting, isn’t it?”

But it didn’t happen all at once… you see, at that time, I had another life. One filled with lab coats, beakers, and microscopes, where my main concern was testing the resilience of various fabrics under all sorts of conditions… you know… the everyday world of science. (Although it's always nice when a material almost turns pink - for scientific purposes, naturally!) It’s still one of my favourite aspects of the day, that lab full of wonder, full of secrets about everything we touch… the joy of finding those tiny hidden pieces of the fabric that’s the universe, and seeing them under the microscope. The most colourful kaleidoscopic landscapes in miniature! You could be making lipstick, you could be trying to stop a tear in a suit and I would find the secrets…of the everyday stuff, but how did it relate to being Pink Tutu Sparkles?

”What can I do about this love for tutus and this science background… what’s the answer, dear, what’s the answer?” I pondered these thoughts, you see it all seems so… incompatible… until that spark of creative thinking…the lightbulb goes on. The fabric…the tutu! Eureka! The two can be fused together. (That science degree was a good investment, wasn’t it!)

Well, I decided that science by day was just another sort of performance, another story to tell! And Pink Tutu Sparkles needed to have a stage… and it didn’t have to be big, or fancy, in fact, it really didn’t have to be anything but myself! I decided that was good enough! ?

So, it’s true. My love of science and the art of dance both blossomed in Derbyshire. Both led me to Barnet. One to a science lab… another to this wondrous stage, a magnificent performance space in Barnet with everything set up to showcase an artistic event like this… it really feels like all those tiny threads of life have all tied together and intertwined into my life journey.

That’s right, my loves. Life is really all about that…that perfect, magical blend of things you never thought would fit. From a laboratory, to a stage, to Barnet... and now, even to your balcony! That’s the wonder of this Pink Tutu journey... and yours too, darling!

So remember, take a twirl in a pink tutu and let's spread some joy together! Remember to tag #PinkTutuChallenge on all your pink tutu adventures, you’ll make a Pink Tutu Queen very happy indeed!

Oh! Before you run away, here are some fabulous little things I found in Barnet… and all the while my thoughts about Barnet just went “pink”, like everything in life…

Tutu-tastic Takeaways:

  • The Barnet Dance Festival is absolutely magical! Just amazing, so inspiring to see such beautiful, creative performances! I’m absolutely adding this event to my calendar. You must see this at least once, and maybe, if I’m lucky enough, I might be back again next year!

  • Did I tell you about this amazing pink café I stumbled upon…called, ”Sweet Pea’s”. With it’s pastel pink walls and delicious pastries (and pink icing!) I nearly had a meltdown, I felt right at home, which is a very good thing! (As good as finding my other love for baking. You can't deny a bit of sugar rush can't be great fuel for getting all creative, you know! )

  • Barnet's market had so much interesting fabric… you wouldn’t believe! A whole stall, just with pink ribbons, velvet, and chiffon, and I came home with some more fabric inspiration to make my next custom-made creation! I love mixing and matching materials. It’s another aspect of creativity, just like combining science and art, and it helps me create all sorts of wonderful unique styles! (Yes, those fabrics were for my tutu!) But just wait until you see my new designs… I’m experimenting with fabrics specifically designed for tutus… you won’t believe how good it feels!

  • As I strolled around Barnet, the little cafes and quaint boutiques seemed to radiate such a fun atmosphere! All I could think was, ”This place must have been made just for me!” (I was probably a little overwhelmed by all the beautiful bright pink places...but, of course I did love every moment…it was truly a joyous escape. It almost makes me feel like a little fairy flitting about the place, just loving life and all it's wonders!

Oh, what adventures I'm going on… but don’t worry! There are many more fun escapades planned. And of course, I’ll be sharing all the pink, tutuy goodness!

Keep twirling, darlings, and keep watching PinkTutu.com
