Darwen Dares to Sparkle! ?

Hello lovelies! It's your girl, Pink Tutu Sparkles, reporting live from the fabulous town of Darwen, Lancashire. This is blog post number 10019 - can you believe it? We're hitting the big numbers and I couldn't be happier to share my latest adventures with you!

This week, I took a bit of a detour from my usual glamorous life - traded the glitz and glam of the city for a spot of countryside charm. You see, Darwen holds a special place in my heart, even though it’s a tad further away than my usual gig locations. It's where I got my very first taste of theatre magic, seeing the classic Beauty and the Beast at the Theatr Clwyd when I was a little one. Remember that iconic yellow ballgown? Well, let's just say it sparked my own love for all things dramatic and dazzling, setting me on my pink tutu path!

Now, you might be wondering why a queen of colour and tulle is venturing to a town like Darwen. It all started when a fellow sparkle enthusiast, my good friend Pollyanna, told me about this quaint little fair happening there. Apparently, it's a legendary local affair with stalls, games, music and – wait for it - a fantastic drag competition! This, my dear readers, was a chance I just couldn’t miss.

So, I packed my bag (a massive pink suitcase, naturally) and set off for the north of England on the early morning train. It’s always a delight to watch the world rush past, a panorama of fields, villages and even the occasional cheeky sheep – hello to all the woolly wonders!

Upon arriving at Darwen, the energy was electrifying! Everyone seemed to be bursting with excitement, just ready to have some fun. The atmosphere was wonderfully vibrant, like a giant pink candy floss cloud ready to burst with joy. My heart was practically doing a pirouette, and trust me, I haven't even hit the stage yet!

Before diving headfirst into the fairground chaos, I wanted to take a little tour of this historic little town. Now, you know how much I love ballet and dance, so of course I had to check out the Darwen Valley Arts Centre. It was beautifully designed and hosted the most amazing dance class in their state-of-the-art studio. Can you imagine, being able to unleash my inner ballerina with a room all to myself, feeling that pink tutu swirling as I leaped and twirled? Just a dream come true!

Once I’d stretched my legs (figuratively, and literally with a few elegant pliés), I went on to explore the charming market street. Darwen's got a real mix of cute independent shops and delis, a far cry from the high-street glitz and glam I'm usually accustomed to. But you know what? There was something about it, this unassuming, friendly vibe. Plus, there's always room for a good vintage dress hunt, am I right? And speaking of shopping, how can I forget the irresistible bakeries selling the most amazing pink cake? This is where my pink tutu-loving heart truly shines!

As evening approached, the anticipation for the fair became tangible. The sounds of the crowd, the aroma of sizzling sausages, the twinkling fairy lights, all added up to pure, joyous pandemonium! And guess what? There was even a magnificent carousel with a sparkly pink horse! Did I mention I love horses too? My inner child squealed with delight!

Of course, I wouldn't be a true drag queen if I didn't show off my dazzling ensemble. For my Darwen debut, I went for a bold look: a flamboyant pink tutu adorned with rainbow-coloured sequined stars and a shimmering pink leotard, with matching hot pink knee-high boots. A statement necklace made from real pearls and a shimmering pink headband tied with a glittery bow completed my fairy princess-meets-popstar look.

But it was time for the competition, and boy oh boy, did those fellow queens deliver! There was the queenly Crystal who brought the house down with her soulful voice and sassy attitude; the hilarious Trixie, whose witty one-liners kept everyone laughing; and the gravity-defying Glam-a-tron, whose flips and aerial routines would make even a professional gymnast jealous. They truly showed everyone what it means to embrace their inner sparkle, with confidence and charm!

Now, about the competition itself – well, let's just say it was a true spectacle! There were bright lights, a dazzling disco ball, and even some hilarious judges who gave us all some good-natured, but sassy commentary. But you know what they say? “The show must go on,” and with a heart full of pink tutu pride, I strutted onto the stage to the applause of the crowd.

My act? Let’s just say I had everyone shouting "PINK!” with my powerful performance. There was lip-syncing to some of my favourite pop divas, a high-energy dance routine with my troupe of mini tutu-clad backup dancers, and a truly breathtaking finale that had everyone on their feet, cheering!

I was blown away by the incredible support I received from the Darwen audience. They were absolutely roaring with laughter, whooping with delight and genuinely connecting with my act. Even when my microphone died during a dramatic ballad, they cheered me on, singing along to the music! Talk about true fandom!

After the performance, I took time to meet and mingle with the crowd. There were children with sparkly eye shadow, couples who clearly hadn’t been afraid to dress up for the occasion, and fellow drag enthusiasts ready to share stories and advice. It's in those moments of connection that I truly feel the magic of this world – and believe me, it was magical!

While I might have come to Darwen looking for adventure, I found so much more: laughter, connection, and a whole lot of love. Darwen proved to me once again, that magic and wonder can be found anywhere, even in the heart of a charming little town in Lancashire. And you know what? It has only cemented my passion for spreading pink tutu love far and wide!

But, my dears, there’s more to this journey. While I’ve shared the highlights of my Darwen experience, my adventures are far from over.

Until next time,

Pink Tutu Sparkles ✨
