Tutu Tuesday in Scarborough: A Celebration of Frills and Twirls #tututuesday
The sun was shining and the seagulls were squawking as I arrived in Scarborough, a beautiful seaside town known for its Victorian charm and stunning cliffside views. But today, it wasn’t the sea that drew me in, it was the lure of #tututuesday, a glorious day dedicated to the most whimsical garment: the tutu.
Now, I'm not talking about your standard, everyday ballet tutu. Oh no! Today, we're celebrating all things disco! Picture swirling skirts of vibrant pinks, oranges and greens, each twirl catching the sunlight, and let’s not forget the disco-ball-esque embellishments – sequins, beads, you name it, they were all there!
I'd planned my outfit meticulously. It was a pale pink tulle tutu, with delicate, sparkly pink fabric flowers adorning the waistband and cascading down the skirt. Underneath, I wore a silver sequin top and some hot pink glitter heels, because a little extra never hurt, right?
As I wandered through the town, the joy was infectious. There was a sense of community and camaraderie that's impossible to find in the city. It felt like everyone was united in their love for the frill, the fluff, and the fun that only a tutu can bring.
Let's talk about the styles. There were classics - full-skirted, traditional ballet tutus, with their tiers of flowing tulle, but with a disco twist, like an electric pink, glittery overlay. Then there were the modern takes – pencil skirts fashioned from layers of soft tulle, or even sparkly leggings with attached frills, just daring enough to be classed as tutu-esque. Some people even went full-on theatrical, donning giant feathered headbands and bold makeup, giving off serious 'Saturday Night Fever' vibes.
I spotted a group of friends, each wearing a different coloured tutu, strutting their stuff to a portable disco ball. They were twirling and spinning, laughter filling the air, each of them radiating sheer, unadulterated joy.
Later, as I strolled along the seafront, I encountered a couple - he was sporting a black tuxedo and she, a white tutu with shimmering silver embroidery, perfectly embodying the disco chic look. I even bumped into the resident "Disco Snail." Yes, you heard right! This legendary gastropod is a local celebrity known for his iridescent shell and, I hear, for being quite the party animal. He was even rocking a tiny disco ball accessory on his shell, and if he wasn't so slow, I'm sure he would have shown me some dance moves!
The afternoon unfolded like a whirlwind of fun. I had a go at a life-size 'Tutu Jenga' (who knew a tower of tulle could be so entertaining!) and even participated in a 'Best Tutu Dance' competition, where we had to bust our best disco moves to some classic ABBA. My pirouettes may have been a bit rusty, but the good vibes and laughter were abundant.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I couldn't help but feel a surge of happy exhaustion. This day in Scarborough was unlike any other. It wasn’t just about tutus. It was about embracing silliness, celebrating individuality and remembering that sometimes, all you need to find pure joy is a frilly, twirly, glitter-bomb of a skirt.
If you're ever in Scarborough on a Tuesday, and you need a bit of sunshine and sparkles, I highly recommend finding yourself a tutu and joining in the fun. Trust me, it's the perfect remedy for the Monday blues and a fantastic way to show the world you can be bold, brave, and utterly brilliant, even if your clothes aren't!
And if you happen to spot the disco snail, do say hi! He's a charming fellow, although quite slow in getting back to you!
