Liverpool Tutu Tuesday: A Whirlwind of Pink & Glitter
Hello fellow fashionistas! It’s your girl, Rosie, reporting live from the heart of Liverpool where a whirlwind of tutus and disco fever has just swept through the streets. Yes, it’s Tutu Tuesday, a day where everyone’s inner ballerina comes out to play – and play we did!
Now, let’s be real. It’s not every day you see a sea of tulle billowing through the streets of Liverpool, but then again, this isn’t any ordinary Tuesday. Tutu Tuesday is an occasion where practicality goes out the window and we all embrace the pure joy of twirling, whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just a bit of a twirl enthusiast.
The energy was electric. As I strutted down Bold Street, my pale pink tulle tutu practically vibrating with excitement, I was met with a chorus of “Ooohs” and “Ahhhs,” and not just from the disco snail (you know, the one that’s always creeping about with a disco ball on its shell, the true hero of #Tututuesday). Even the pigeons were giving me side-eye with their heads cocked, clearly judging my choice of footwear – which was, by the way, a pair of gold platform sandals. I mean, what’s a disco tutu without a little bit of height, right?
From the classic pouter pigeon style (think graceful and timeless) to the more adventurous layered designs with fringing and sparkle (because why not go full-on disco, right?) everyone was flaunting their own personal tutu flair. There was a definite preference for pinks and purples, perfectly reflecting the retro disco theme, and some even went all out with sequins and feathers - I saw one gal rocking a feather boa with her pink tutu, which totally upped the fabulous factor!
And then, there was the music. Everywhere you looked, the air was filled with the rhythmic throb of disco beats. From iconic tracks by the Bee Gees to the high-energy disco anthems of Donna Summer, Liverpool had truly become a vibrant, shimmering, pulsating disco haven. I even spotted a couple of couples doing a truly impressive, impromptu foxtrot on the street, fueled by the pure joy of the day.
Now, I can’t talk about Tutu Tuesday without mentioning the grand finale: the Tutu Contest. Every Tuesday, the crowd gathers in the square for the most spectacularly silly tutu competition. This week, there were some real showstoppers, from a ballerina wearing a full-blown, floor-length tutu made of glitter (it looked like she’d stepped straight out of a disco ball!) to a fella in a bright yellow tutu complete with a crown of sunflowers (a real statement, I must say!). But the true winner, in my book, was a young boy who had tied dozens of helium balloons to his tutu – he literally took flight. That’s the kind of spirit I’m talking about.
And then, just like that, the evening drew to a close, the crowd began to disperse, and the final notes of "Stayin' Alive" faded into the night. But, one thing was clear: Tutu Tuesday in Liverpool had not just been a spectacle; it had been a reminder that sometimes, a little bit of fun and whimsy is exactly what we need to brighten our week.
