Ilford’s Tutu Tuesday: A Whirlwind of Pink & Disco! #tututuesday
Oh, the joys of Tutu Tuesday in Ilford! Every Tuesday, this normally rather humdrum corner of East London transforms into a hotbed of pink tutus, gleaming leg warmers, and of course, disco-infused everything. As a fellow ballet enthusiast, it's my sacred duty to share this spectacle with the world.
This isn't your traditional tutu scene, my darlings. Forget the classic white, billowing, tutus of Swan Lake; think "Studio 54" chic, a disco explosion of tutus in shocking pink, lime green, shimmering turquoise - every colour of the rainbow, basically. It's the most fabulous sartorial contradiction imaginable. You can even snag a truly unique “disco tutu” – these are typically made with metallic fabric or have a layered look. The “disco snail”, a particularly extravagant style with layers upon layers of shimmering tulle, is my personal favourite, (perfect for making a grand entrance.)
Ilford Tutu Tuesday kicked off last month and the atmosphere is buzzing with excitement. The vibe? Imagine "Saturday Night Fever" meets a "Grease" musical, add in a dollop of glam rock. It's pure unadulterated joy. And did I mention the music? Think ABBA, Donna Summer, the Bee Gees - all those classics, cranked up to 11.
There’s something really wonderful about watching everyone shimmy, twirl, and dance to the beat. Some ladies even whip out their ‘ballet boots’ - that's ballet shoes worn with socks. (Not for the faint of heart, this trend is certainly a look!)
But what is it that makes Tutu Tuesday so special? Why do we wear these ridiculous yet adorable ensembles?
Honestly, I think it's because Tutu Tuesday allows everyone to let loose, embrace their inner “childhood dancer” and have pure, unfiltered fun. There’s no judgement, just a sea of colourful tulle and smiles. We’re celebrating the joy of dancing with absolutely zero pretense. (Not that Tutu Tuesday requires any pretense – we’re far too busy twirling and flaunting our funky looks!
If you find yourself in Ilford on a Tuesday, do yourself a favour and pop by for the most vibrant, joyous spectacle you will ever encounter.
