Tutu Tuesday in Greenfield, Wisconsin: A Dance Through Fashion and History

Hey, you lovely ballet fanatics! It's your girl, Clara, bringing you another edition of #TutuTuesday. Today, we're taking a twirl through the streets of Greenfield, Wisconsin, exploring the captivating world of ballet fashion right here in the heartland of the USA.

Now, when you think of ballet tutus, you probably picture the classic, billowing romantic tutus like the ones we see in Swan Lake or The Sleeping Beauty. Those are iconic, of course, and there's something incredibly elegant about their flowing lines and delicate tulle.

But let's face it, even those of us with a deep love for ballet history can't always resist a modern take. My current obsession is the "whimsical tutu." It’s a play on the romantic tutu with modern touches, like layered, asymmetrical cuts, color pops, or even unique embellishments. And when you find the right one, you're practically guaranteed to get a double-take on the street!

Now, Greenfield, Wisconsin, might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about ballet's cutting edge, but hear me out. There's a lot of charm in the Midwest, and Greenfield, especially, has this unexpected vibrant arts scene. Just last weekend, I discovered the most darling little dance shop – I swear, it was like stepping into a fairytale! I got my hands on the most stunning powder blue tutu that was just begging to be worn on a windy day.

You see, the joy of a tutu isn't just about how it looks - it's also about the confidence it brings. The twirl, the flair, the ability to move with grace and elegance – it's pure magic! And I don’t know about you, but when I find that perfect tutu, it empowers me to feel like I can take on anything.

Speaking of feeling powerful, I have to share a little story from my time at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Dance in Milwaukee, not far from Greenfield. Our teacher, Mrs. Carter, had a saying, “Your tutu isn’t just an outfit – it’s a statement. A statement of discipline, dedication, and artistry.” I remember thinking at the time, “Okay, Mrs. Carter, I hear you!”

But after years of dancing, traveling, and trying to make my way as a ballet artist, I'm starting to understand. When you’re wearing that tutu, you’re taking center stage, and whether you're in the studio or on the street, you're projecting an energy that’s undeniably impactful.

So, today on #TutuTuesday, my message is this: Be brave. Find the tutu that speaks to you. Whether it’s classic, contemporary, or just a little whimsical, let it unleash your inner artist. Remember, even here in Greenfield, Wisconsin, we have our own unique dance to express! And who knows, maybe we can start a little tutu revolution, right here, right now.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a little twirl to catch!

With a final flourish, Clara

Some of my favorite tutu styles:

  • Romantic Tutu: This classic tutu with multiple layers of tulle and a longer, more flowing shape is a staple of classical ballet.
  • Whimsical Tutu: I've been digging these ones lately! The cuts are often asymmetrical or shorter, with fun patterns and even added embellishments. Think ribbons, beads, feathers, or sequins.
  • Contemporary Tutu: It's all about bold colors, textured materials, and a minimalist approach to layering. I have a contemporary tutu made of recycled fabrics with a geometric design that looks absolutely amazing.
