Tutu Tuesday in Orléans, Centre-Val de Loire, France: A Parisian Ballet Adventure

G'day lovelies! Your favourite ballet-loving Aussie blogger is back with a little French flair. This week, I took a trip to the beautiful city of Orléans, nestled in the heart of the Loire Valley. But, there's no need to tell you about its picturesque chateaux and charming cafes. We're all about the tutu here, right? And boy, did Orléans deliver on the tutu front!

From the moment I stepped off the train, I was captivated. It felt like stepping back in time with its cobblestone streets and ancient buildings. And the energy, well, that was something else. It was all about embracing a slower pace, savoring the sights, sounds, and the sheer magic of this ancient city.

But back to the tutus. Oh, the tutus! They were absolutely breathtaking, showcasing an array of styles I've never seen before. From the whimsical tulle layers of the romantic tutu, to the structured, sleek lines of the contemporary tutu, it was a fashion-lover's dream come true. And don't even get me started on the exquisite detailing. Each tutu felt like a piece of art, painstakingly crafted by skilled artisans. I'm pretty sure I saw a few delicate little embroidered fleurs de lis hiding on a couple of the tutus – too cute, right?

Let me tell you a bit about my journey. First stop, a little gem of a shop called 'La Boutique de la Danse' tucked away in a quaint side street. Stepping inside felt like walking into a secret fairytale world. Imagine racks overflowing with vibrant satin tutus in every colour imaginable – blues, greens, pinks, you name it! They had a whole section dedicated to 'La Danse Classique', featuring the most stunningly handcrafted traditional tutus. Think, impossibly delicate silk layers with exquisite embroidery and those gorgeous romantic bows that just steal your breath away. I wanted to take them all home, honestly! And just as I thought I'd found heaven, I spotted a section labeled 'La Danse Moderne.' Here, it was all about clean lines and dynamic silhouettes. These tutus had such a bold and expressive look, crafted from modern materials, with the coolest mesh panel detailing you've ever seen. This shop was basically a dancer's Disneyland. It had everything from tiny baby tutus for little dancers right through to those extra-long, dreamy-looking tutus. Honestly, the woman running the shop had a real passion for the art of dance. She was just thrilled to share her love of the tutu with a fellow dance enthusiast, even sharing little stories of local ballerinas who wore some of those special pieces on stage. I think she could see I was smitten!

Of course, my tutu adventures didn't end there. My next stop was the glorious Orléans Theatre, which boasts a truly impressive ballet season, featuring all the iconic French ballets and visiting international stars. And you just had to see those tutus! It was the perfect blend of tradition and contemporary. From those classic, voluminous romantic tutus for Swan Lake and the exquisitely detailed ones worn in Giselle – wow, what a visual treat! The choreographers even used some of those modern, mesh tutus with dramatic cutouts and layers in a captivating new production. That bold look really set the stage on fire – think sleek, black and edgy. There's no denying the power of a well-crafted tutu to tell a story on stage.

After the theatre, I made sure to check out the local dance studios in Orléans, where passion for ballet oozed from every nook and cranny. Some were housed in beautiful historical buildings – so chic. And it wasn't just ballet schools that embraced the tutu. The local community theatre put on a fabulous Christmas production, and their young ballerinas looked utterly delightful with their red and white striped tutus. The girls even donned their sparkly tutu costumes at the city's Christmas market. Who wouldn't want a picture of the little ballerina with sparkly hair and tutus made of candy cane stripes, right? I can see that passion for the tutu really runs deep here in Orléans, from the theatre stages to the everyday lives of its people.

You're probably thinking, "What a dream trip, but what about tutu prices?". Let's just say it wasn't all bargain-bin prices like those back home in the land of sunshine and surf! Some of the beautiful handmade pieces were seriously investment pieces – a little more than my student-dancer budget could handle! But there was something special about the craftsmanship that made each tutu worth every cent. Besides, there were plenty of gorgeous tutus within the student budget too, both in shops and dance studios.

In Orléans, every street seemed to echo the energy of ballet, especially during the evening 'Tutu Twilight' events where the city transforms with dazzling tutu-inspired installations and light shows, making even the local cathedral shimmer with an extra sprinkle of magic!

My Orléans adventure has been a delightful dance into the culture of this vibrant city. The city truly embraces ballet in a special way that celebrates the elegance of the tutu as both a costume and a form of self-expression. As for me, I'll never forget my #tututuesday in Orléans.
