Craponne Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France - Tutu Tuesday

G'day from sunny, albeit a little chilly, France! You guys wouldn't believe the incredible time I've had this past week. Exploring this stunning part of France, tucked away amongst the rolling green hills and charming medieval villages, has been an absolute dream.

It all started with a delightful ballet class at the Centre Chorégraphique d’Auvergne. This beautiful centre, right here in Craponne, truly breathes ballet. And yes, you guessed it – my favourite part? Tutues! Oh, I am just besotted with tutues.

These French tutues – well, let’s just say, they’re not like any you’ll see at home. There’s something magical about them, almost otherworldly. They’re a little more intricate, you know? With layers of hand-sewn lace, flowing silk and intricate embroidery. They practically sing when you spin!

My class was focused on exploring classical techniques – you know, the kind of graceful, fluid movements that French ballerinas are known for. I tried my best to mimic those moves, and while I may not be a seasoned pro, let me tell ya, it was seriously fun to try! We were using a variation on the traditional pas de bourrée, and let me tell you – I am now a believer in the power of tutu spins. They’re like an escape pod – launching you straight into another world. It’s like the magic of tutus on a Tuesday – hence #tututuesday, my dears!

I felt right at home in the class. These French dancers, they have such a passion, you know? Their love for ballet practically radiates through their movements. And they were so welcoming, which was nice after that rather frantic flight I had to get here from Brisbane.

Speaking of being at home – I must share my favourite find from my Craponne explorations. The Boutique d’Arts du Ballet. Honestly, you can smell the romanticism in the air as soon as you step inside. They've got every style you can imagine – romantic, classical, and even modern – but they are all so carefully handcrafted and beautifully finished.

Now, to the real #tututuesday stars of my Craponne journey. I know, I know. This sounds a little dramatic, but just wait until you hear me out.

I'm going to level with you: Craponne was, for lack of a better term, not on my travel radar. I wasn't quite sure what to expect – but when I stepped out onto the Place de la Liberté and caught a glimpse of the beautiful architecture, with the stunning view of the valley in the distance, I knew it would be a memorable place to spend some time. And let’s just say, Craponne in all its small-town charm lived up to every one of my expectations!

But what really stole my heart was the unexpectedly rich ballet scene. You wouldn't believe it. Right there in the small town centre, surrounded by all those gorgeous old buildings, is this amazing ballet school - l’École de Ballet de Craponne. It is a place where dreams are nurtured – not just in ballet, but in general – with all of its classic French traditions and charming history. The passion for dance, especially ballet, really resonated, not just in the school itself, but the whole atmosphere in this town – and that really captured me! And the little tutues in that school – they are divine – just so tiny and adorable!.

It’s honestly like a step back in time to the golden age of ballet – a time of gorgeous silk tutues and meticulous details. Every move and every pose felt imbued with history – an eerie feeling almost that makes you feel you are part of something greater. There is no denying the impact this scene had on me, especially when it comes to tutues.

But that’s not all, folks! As my days turned into weeks – something spectacular started unfolding. There are a lot of other fantastic ballet companies around the region - and one in particular caught my eye – the Compagnie de Danse Contemporaine de Lyon – a fantastic, avant-garde group that really challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and explore some bold, modern movements. And let me tell you, their take on the tutu was pure, sheer genius!

Now, while we’re on the topic of tutus – you know they don't always have to be fluffy and grand. These Parisian designers know exactly what I'm talking about! From edgy punk-inspired tutus to contemporary designs that explore unconventional silhouettes, the range – the sheer inventiveness, honestly – has taken me by complete surprise. It's been such an amazing way to challenge my perception of tutus and all their creative potential!

But just in case you’re worried I’m all tutues all the time – I can assure you that is not the case. I have been spending my days soaking in the beautiful, vibrant colours of the French countryside. You wouldn’t believe the sheer abundance of flowers, fields bursting with sunflowers and the lavender fields – absolutely dreamy!

The locals – they are the heart and soul of this little corner of the world. Their genuine hospitality has me hooked – you guys have to check out the market in Craponne! I snagged a stunning French vintage hat – it’s become my signature look during these adventures!

And then – after a long, strenuous day – you know I treat myself to some local goodies. And yes, you guessed it – pastries! My all-time favourites are these divine little cakes that have been baked with vanilla and fresh fruits from local gardens – I may or may not have had one or two more than I should have – oh, the deliciousness!

Speaking of “more” – I am starting to realise that this trip may not have been quite long enough! Maybe I need to add another month – maybe a little more. You see, my dear friends – I’ve fallen head-over-heels in love with Craponne, its countryside and, most importantly, it’s passionate dance scene. I can’t wait to continue my dance adventures here in France. Until then – stay tuned for more #tututuesday inspiration.
