Tutu Tuesday in Airdrie: A whirl of tulle and tea

Ah, Airdrie. You might be surprised to hear me gushing about this charming little town, but trust me, when it comes to a whimsical tutu-themed day, this place really knows how to waltz into the spotlight. Every Tuesday, it's "Tutu Tuesday" here, and let me tell you, this isn't your usual Tuesday! It's a day where everyone from little ballerinas to grown-up dreamers embrace the tutu for all its frilly glory.

I'm a ballerina through and through, with years spent pirouetting and leaping in the theatre. I might not grace the stage these days, but I still live and breathe ballet, which is why "Tutu Tuesday" caught my eye like a shimmering rhinestone on a costume. So, naturally, I just had to visit and see it for myself. What's more, I decided to document it all for you, my fellow dance lovers.

Firstly, the town of Airdrie itself was surprisingly charming. Cobblestone streets, quirky shops selling everything from homemade fudge to vintage tutus, and friendly faces that greeted me with smiles as wide as my tutu's layers. But the real magic of Tutu Tuesday unfolded as I walked along the main street. It was like stepping onto a stage where the audience were the townsfolk. Everywhere you looked, tutus twirled in a delightful kaleidoscope of colors: a little girl with a powder-puff tutu chasing pigeons, a shopkeeper in a shimmering green one ringing up a customer's purchase, even the bakery window had a mini tutu-clad gingerbread man peeking out!

The sheer variety of tutu styles was astounding. Classic Romantic tutus in diaphanous tulle, modern-day tutus in bold colors and dramatic shapes, even some delightfully quirky DIY creations made from scraps of fabric, all worn with unabashed glee. The air was thick with excitement, laughter, and the occasional rustle of tulle as passers-by spun around for a spontaneous twirl.

Then came the tea party. An absolute must-do on any self-respecting "Tutu Tuesday" itinerary. Held at the beautifully restored Victorian tearoom called "The Swan's Nest", it was an enchanting setting with elegant china and delectable pastries, but of course, it wouldn't be a tutu tea party without tutus! The ladies wore tutus of all shapes and sizes, while gentlemen sported top hats and bow ties. It was all very British and very delightful. We laughed, we chatted, we even had a quick impromptu tutu-themed quiz.

Speaking of quizzes, here are some Tutu Tuesday fun facts that you might not have known:

  • The tradition of Tutu Tuesday in Airdrie began in 2016 by a group of local schoolteachers who were passionate about dance and wanted to create a unique and fun community event.
  • Tutus are available for hire from a local shop on Tuesdays for ยฃ1, or you can come fully kitted out!
  • Proceeds from Tutu Tuesday go to support local charities that promote arts and dance in the community.

But what really struck me, besides the whimsical fun and colourful displays, was the sense of community spirit. From the friendly shopkeeper to the grandma in a pink tutu, everyone was smiling and happy to chat, welcoming strangers like myself into their quirky little world. Tutu Tuesday was about more than tutus; it was about joy, acceptance, and finding fun in the simple things.

So, if you ever find yourself near Airdrie on a Tuesday, be sure to embrace the #Tututuesday spirit! Throw on a tutu, grab a cuppa at "The Swan's Nest", and immerse yourself in the magical whirl of this extraordinary town. I guarantee you'll leave with a skip in your step, a smile on your face, and a whole lot of tulle-filled memories.
