Tutu Tuesday in Bullsbrook, Western Australia #tututuesday

G'day, fellow dance enthusiasts! It's your girl, Olivia, back with another blog post. Today, I'm channeling my inner ballerina and sharing my love for the iconic tutu, because, let's face it, who doesn't adore a little twirling in a tulle masterpiece? But before I get carried away with my passion, let's take a step back and appreciate the diverse world of tutus. From the classic romantic tutus with their delicate layers of tulle to the bolder contemporary tutus that challenge traditional shapes and lines, the tutu is truly a dance icon that evolves alongside ballet itself.

Today, however, I'm going for something a bit more unexpected - I'm embracing a more vintage vibe. Picture this: sunshine filtering through the leaves in the Perth hills as I dance in a pale pink tutu with soft, graceful lines, echoing the romantic ballet stories it was created for. Let’s just say, you know what they say about classic tutus: they never go out of style!

In my opinion, the key to a great Tutu Tuesday isn’t just the garment itself, but it's also the whole experience! I’m loving the sunshine and relaxed, breezy vibe of Bullsbrook and decided to share my Tutu Tuesday in one of the city’s most beautiful natural spaces - the Avon Valley National Park. The landscape feels pretty timeless and fits the aesthetic of my outfit. And let me tell you, this park is a ballet dancer’s dream! I feel the tranquility as I pose amongst the stunning scenery and imagine I’m one of the elegant, fairytale characters you see in the classic ballets. For the photo shoot, I chose a spot in the Park where the gentle, swaying leaves danced alongside my tulle and my tulle. I felt like a little fairy in a scene out of ‘Giselle’ or ‘Sleeping Beauty.’

Now, you may be thinking, “Olivia, what about your ballet class? Surely a Tutu Tuesday has to include the studio.” Fair point! But I figured, since we’re celebrating the essence of Tutu Tuesdays – dancing, freedom, and twirling - what better way to honour that than by taking to nature? And honestly, this kind of scenery feels so inspirational – much like a stage that’s free from the confines of a studio!

So, whether it’s in a studio, at home, or for me, in a breathtaking outdoor setting, I think we can all agree that Tutu Tuesday is an excuse to embrace the magic of dance!

Here are some of the fun and versatile styles of tutus I love that would fit a beautiful day outdoors :

  • The **Romantic Tutu:** If you’re looking for the classic fairytale vibe, this one is for you. With its flowing layers of tulle and simple shape, it captures the innocence of childhood, a time when every ballerina dreams of being a princess. Think about classic ballet scenes from ‘Swan Lake,’ or the soft grace of ‘Giselle.’ They bring out the sweetness in ballet.
  • The **Contemporary Tutu**: Breaking from tradition and embracing bolder designs – the contemporary tutu makes a powerful statement. You might see one that has more structure with layers and pleats or you may be tempted by a tutu made from a different material entirely! I find myself inspired by its unique spirit – and so, a Tutu Tuesday outfit that blends classic elegance with a modern flair could work really well in a park or other scenic setting! There’s so much diversity within this category. I really think it reflects the diverse expressions and storytelling in ballet itself.
  • The **Mini Tutu**: Okay, this isn’t really a tutu, but it’s fun for a relaxed approach to Tutu Tuesday. I like it when dancers bring out their mini-tutu for fun, informal occasions. Whether it’s just a playful take on ballet, a sweet outfit, or maybe even part of a more complex costume - this playful addition to your wardrobe brings a little bit of ballerina charm to your style, no matter where you are.
  • The **Classical Tutu**: Think ‘The Nutcracker!’ With its short skirt and layers of tulle, this tutu adds elegance, precision, and character to any performance. But remember - don't just limit this style to a class or a show. Go for it and try it outside too. The traditional silhouette, made for those classic ballet steps like the pas de bourrĂ©e, looks incredibly stunning! I know my next Tutu Tuesday will probably involve one. Maybe a ‘Nutcracker’ themed photo shoot in the Avon Valley!

Tutus can really enhance those ballet moves. They can make a movement more powerful and bring out those flowing lines! In my opinion, tutus really amplify a ballerina’s style. You’ve just gotta remember, tutus come in a variety of colours, patterns and even embellishments, giving a ballerina that sparkle she needs to express her passion on and off the stage! They’re really magical!

In addition to choosing a tutu you love, another great tip for any dancer? I’m all about celebrating creativity with my outfit! Find a top and tights that look good with your chosen tutu, then experiment with accessories – I use them for a lot of inspiration. Don’t be afraid to add some personal flair with jewellery and hair styles too! Even some nice natural flowers from the Park will really enhance your outfit – I often add a flower in my hair for a truly special touch – it goes a long way in the photos too. Remember that when you choose a costume – it should show who you are – you know? Just be yourself! And as we say in Australia – go on and have a ball!

Until next time, my dance fam! Stay safe and remember to follow me on socials – don't forget to tag me #tututuesday when you’re out rocking your favorite tutus! I hope you find your perfect inspiration. Remember – a little bit of tutu fun can make your Tuesday super amazing.
