Tutu Tuesday in Balranald, New South Wales: A Celebration of Dance in the Outback #tututuesday

G'day, fellow tutu enthusiasts! It's your girl, Maddie, back with another dose of dancey goodness. This week, I'm swapping the city lights for the outback plains as I bring Tutu Tuesday to Balranald, New South Wales! You know I love finding new and exciting locations for our weekly tutu celebration, and this little Aussie town definitely ticked all the boxes.

Now, I'm no stranger to hitting the road for ballet. My travels have taken me from the bustling dance studios of Sydney to the tranquil shores of Tasmania, and everywhere in between. But there's something extra special about taking the art form out to the regions. It's all about bringing joy and inspiration to communities, and reminding everyone that ballet is for everyone, regardless of where they live.

As I set up shop in Balranald's Main Street, the locals were so welcoming. You wouldn't believe the stories I heard about the history of dance in this town - everything from amateur ballet classes held in community halls to the occasional touring performance. It was truly heartwarming to see how much dance means to this community. I’m sure we could see a resurgence of dance in regional Australia. We are all starting to look more outwards to rural areas for new experiences and new experiences are where stories start and communities are built. You know we are always looking for a good story. A Tutu Tuesday, in fact.

And speaking of stories, Balranald gave me one for the ages. I was chatting with this lovely old bloke at the local cafe, who told me about the time he actually saw the iconic Dame Margot Fonteyn perform live! Talk about a ballet legend. I felt the Aussie history come alive with his tale. I was mesmerised and I could have listened to his stories all day.

For our Tutu Tuesday in Balranald, I went all out with the styling. You know I love a good theme, and what better way to celebrate the outback than with a stunning Australian-themed tutu? It featured vibrant colours reminiscent of the desert landscape, and some playful touches like a gum leaf embellishment and a cute little kangaroo charm. I even had a kookaburra feather adorning my bun. Talk about a dance look fit for the bush!

For those of you unfamiliar with different tutu styles, we could talk about this beautiful tutu in detail.

  • Romantic Tutu - Characterized by the tiered, billowing layers and delicate, translucent fabrics that are often made from tulle or chiffon. They have a flowing, airy look and typically feature a long, slightly gathered skirt, giving the tutu a graceful and delicate feel.
  • Classical Tutu - A short, stiff skirt consisting of multiple layers of tulle or netting and typically worn by ballerinas for traditional ballets such as Swan Lake. These tutus often have a shorter, conical skirt, making them appear smaller and more structured. They typically emphasize the ballet dancer's physique.
  • The Tutu à La Française - This type of tutu, a long tutu that goes all the way down to the ankles. These types of tutus are usually made with two or more layers of stiffened tulle and usually come with an elastic band waist or a waist-sash tie.
  • The Tutu à La Russe - Typically known for its long, conical silhouette that extends well below the knees and it comes with one or two tiers of stiffened tulle and they usually have a thick, wide belt around the waist to give it the perfect "fluffy" appearance.
  • The Neoclassical Tutu - Inspired by the 20th-century move in modern dance to create more practical costumes.

The beauty of a Tutu Tuesday is the simplicity of the expression and it isn't solely about the type of tutu that's worn. Ballet and tutus, it's about the feeling, the movement, the story that's being told. It is a creative and a community thing. It’s the community aspect of this fun that I loved. The folks in Balranald were just as excited about their tutu looks. It felt good to create that sense of togetherness in a different, rural context.

So there you have it, another Tutu Tuesday in the books! It was truly inspiring to witness the love of dance in this unique corner of Australia. I'll definitely be back to Balranald, not just to celebrate Tutu Tuesday, but also to explore all the hidden gems this outback town has to offer. Keep a lookout for all those incredible photo ops and beautiful views that Australia is known for. Until next time, remember to embrace the magic of dance and let your inner tutu queen shine!
