Tutu Tuesday in Beaconsfield, Tasmania: A Fashionable Frenzy of Frills

It’s Tutu Tuesday in Beaconsfield, Tasmania, and the air is buzzing with excitement! You’d think we were gearing up for a big footy game, but no, this is something much more elegant. As a ballet dancer and passionate fashionista, I've got to tell you, there’s nothing like seeing the streets transformed by tutus! This trend has been swirling through the fashion world like a pirouette, and trust me, it’s just getting started.

So, what exactly is Tutu Tuesday, you ask? Well, it’s a brilliant initiative celebrating the delightful absurdity of life. And what’s more absurd than a tutu in a small, quirky Tasmanian town like Beaconsfield? I think not!

Beaconsfield has become a haven for quirky style, thanks in part to our thriving ballet scene (believe it or not, ballet is HUGE in Tasmania!) with the beautiful Royal Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, just a hop and skip from this quaint town. And now, it seems everyone is getting in on the act. Forget jeans and t-shirts, this Tuesday, Beaconsfield is all about tutus!

What I love most about this trend is its accessibility. Whether you’re rocking a classic tulle masterpiece, or you’re rocking a funky modern tutu - this trend really allows for a splash of personality. You can create looks that are playful, sophisticated, and absolutely anything in between! Personally, I’ve been sporting my favourite tutu in a gorgeous vibrant blue, styled with a cute black crop top and some fierce boots.

As I walk down the main street of Beaconsfield, I’m greeted by a sea of smiles and a symphony of tutus. It's seriously the best thing about a day in the city!

My fave thing about this trend? I just love seeing the community come together with smiles on their faces and an unmistakable spirit of playful abandon. This little town has already exceeded my expectations, and seeing so much personality, and, dare I say it, fun, really just reinforces what makes life here so fantastic. The Beaconsfield crew are already well known for their creative expression and infectious personalities, but today the town has gone full-on vibrant!

  • We've got some classic, romantic tutus - a whole bunch of tulle in shades of soft pastel pink, shimmering champagne gold, and crisp white, all radiating pure, traditional elegance.
  • We've got the sassy ones: bolder colours like bright magenta, electric green and neon yellow, these are for the bold souls with an unquenchable thirst for attention! They're paired with ripped denim jackets and Doc Martens, a testament to the fact that you can mix punk rock vibes and high fashion. You just need a bit of confidence and a tutu!
  • The ones that scream “I just want to be comfortable” (my kinda people!) : Simple black cotton skirts worn with chunky sweaters, beanies and Uggs – not traditionally a tutu, but that doesn't matter when you’re talking #Tututuesday, you can work it however you like!
  • And my personal fave, the theatrical crew: these are the people who totally understand that this is not just a fashion moment, but an artform! From elaborate headdresses adorned with sequins to glittery makeup, they are turning Tutu Tuesday into a full-blown performance piece.

Of course, the true highlight of my day? Being invited to judge a mini "Tutu Challenge" at the town’s infamous "The Old Grindstone" cafĂ©. It’s the kind of spot you might not expect to be serving up a heaping side of tutu-related fun but they did not disappoint!

I was blown away by the talent on display, the confidence of these amazing people from all different walks of life who’ve bravely embraced a unique trend, is a beautiful thing! These creative fashionistas weren't afraid to let their tutus do the talking! It was pure fun. And after a close competition, the winner of the competition received the most gorgeous handmade tutu with stunning details in a shimmering lilac with delicate embroidery that you’d never see in any shops.

This isn’t just a local fad. As an Aussie woman living for all things fashion, I see the rise of Tutu Tuesday and how it speaks to a movement that is gaining global attention. It’s the embodiment of joyous self-expression and I hope to see even more creativity, fun and personality being showcased across the globe!

From now on, every Tuesday in Beaconsfield will have me sporting a new look with a fresh twist and I’m excited to see what unique ways this creative community will find to make #tututuesday their own!

Beaconsfield, Tasmania. Tutu Tuesday. You have a place in my heart. Let's keep it up!
