Tutu Tuesday in Saint-Philippe, Quebec: A Celebration of Twirls and Tiaras

Hey everyone! It’s your favourite Canadian ballerina, Lily, back with another post! This week, I'm taking Tutu Tuesday on the road and bringing the spirit of twirling and elegance to my hometown of Saint-Philippe, Quebec! You see, the thing is, Saint-Philippe may be known for its scenic landscapes, its vibrant local market, and its friendly community – but there's something special in the air today, and it’s a *Tutu*–ally electrifying feeling! Get ready for a dance through history, a fashion parade, and a dose of pure Canadian fun!

Tutu Tuesday, if you haven’t heard of it already (but, how could you possibly not be aware of the greatest day in fashion!), is an international trend – a worldwide celebration of all things tutus, and believe me when I tell you – tutues aren't just for ballet! They’re for the playground, for a picnic, a night out on the town or a walk in the park. No matter what you’re doing or where you are, if you're rocking a tutu you're automatically raising your style game by at least ten levels. This Tuesday, everyone is showing off their love of this most magnificent and versatile of all garments – and here in Saint-Philippe there's a *ton* of excitement.

A Journey Through Time: Tutu Styles

Let's rewind the clock – Before it took the world by storm as a trendy fashion piece – the Tutu has a long and storied history. This garment which can be seen at ballets all over the world was originally conceived for the ballet stage in the 1830s by a French ballerina – the famed Marie Taglioni. Since then – a diverse range of tutus have made an appearance – from the traditional romantic style that featured fluttering layers – to the iconic, short, yet powerful style that became a signature piece of the late 19th and early 20th century – the ‘tutu classique’. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that the classic tulle is also being worn as a statement piece, a modern street fashion piece – so this style can be worn with confidence!

Here’s where it gets extra interesting: today, tutus have become more versatile than ever. There’s even ‘tutu for every season’ – let’s just call it ‘Tutu Season’, am I right? From long layered designs (the ‘tutu Romanesque’) in soft fabrics, great for autumnal outfits to sleek black designs, the ‘tutu Noire’ , that are a go-to winter style – these options mean that this fabulous style can complement your personal look no matter the weather or what's on your agenda! In fact, for the month of February – and all month long in Quebec (did someone say maple syrup!) – the ‘tutu canadienne’ has become the quintessential style choice – and we’re all about representing our country!

And you know what – even when we’re doing our everyday routine (think brushing our teeth) – there is definitely something very special about being in our dancing shoes – you know the drill – I’m not talking *those* dancing shoes – but – *ballet* shoes! – and twirling a tutu and adding our Canadian twist. This really makes you feel *special*!

The Heart of Saint-Philippe – Tutu Style

Speaking of feeling *special*, today in Saint-Philippe is something truly magical, as if everyone is celebrating a special day for our entire village ! There’s a Tutu fashion parade! – and it makes walking through the streets a dream. As we look around Saint-Philippe this afternoon (don't worry, I will document it all on social media using the hashtags #tututuesday #saintphilippequebec, #canada , and #tutuqueen) , it’s just impossible to ignore this beautiful tradition!

My very favourite design – and what better day than today – is the ‘tutu canadienne’. Let's take it back to our national heritage – and here's why: Think beautiful bright red, and white fabrics. These materials were actually what we, Canadians had in our own national collection – (back in the days before our amazing stores!)- – they were used to create all types of attire from dresses to suits for special occasions – but here’s a very special tip – the materials also work wonders in a tutu!

Canada, Tutu Love, And a Little Bit of Magic

Tutu Tuesday reminds me of something I’ve always loved about this great country. Canada is full of warmth – especially here in Quebec. The friendly people, the love of life and the love of having a laugh. Canada is home to some *incredibly talented dancers*, as you all know. But beyond being an iconic dance tradition, a symbol of elegant motion and the artistry of the body, the tutu is *so* much more! The Tutu, in its many styles and designs is an opportunity to express oneself, to embrace joy and laughter and be playful – no matter what your age.

That’s what makes this Tutu Tuesday special. The chance to look around the heart of Saint-Philippe and see children and their parents all decked out in tutus dancing down our beautiful streets and reminding everyone that life is for *twirling* and being yourself! And for this day, there is no wrong way to rock a tutu – so keep it classy (because we all love classic ballet and elegance!) keep it fun, and keep on dancing! Catch me at our local ‘Dance-off’ – I’m sure there will be some of you there! Keep your eye on my Insta and Facebook for some great images!
