Tutu Tuesday in Sainte-Henedine, Quebec: A Whirlwind of Tutu-licious Fun! #tututuesday

Hey everyone! It’s your favourite Canadian ballet blogger, Claire, back with another post, this time from the charming town of Sainte-Henedine, Quebec. You know what that means… it’s Tutu Tuesday! 🩰🇨🇦

Today, we’re taking a trip back in time to explore the history of tutus in Canadian ballet. Let’s be honest, those frothy layers of tulle and satin are as synonymous with Canada as maple syrup and poutine! 😉

Did you know that the first professional ballet company in Canada, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, was founded in 1939? It was during that era that the classic, romantic tutus we often see in productions like "Swan Lake" and "Giselle" truly took off in Canada. Talk about a ballerina's dream come true!

But let’s get back to Sainte-Henedine. I was on a mission to find the perfect tutu for this special #tututuesday blog post. I headed to a quaint vintage clothing shop, "The Time Traveller's Wardrobe," in the heart of the town.

What a treasure trove! I found everything from a Victorian-inspired hoop skirt tutu with yards of ruffled lace, perfect for a dramatic performance, to a mid-century modern tutu made with silky, vibrant turquoise chiffon - super stylish and undeniably fun. 💃

Now, it’s time to talk about styles:

  • **Romantic Tutu:** The classic silhouette with a multitude of layers of tulle. Often seen in romantic ballets, it creates that flowing, ethereal look. This style is also known as the “classical tutu.”
  • **Pagan Tutu:** This style has fewer layers than the romantic tutu, but it is still very airy. It’s perfect for portraying the magical, free-spirited character. It's also commonly used for folk-inspired ballets.
  • **Tutu Plat:** This style is designed for leaping! Flattened layers of tulle give dancers maximum air time while still creating a beautiful visual impact. A staple in athletic and neoclassical choreography.
  • **Tutu Short:** A versatile option, great for playful character pieces. Its short length provides more freedom of movement.

There are so many tutu styles, it’s nearly impossible to pick just one. I encourage you to get creative and experiment! After all, that's what Tutu Tuesday is all about: celebrating the beauty, artistry and playful spirit of tutus.

Of course, the real heart of #tututuesday is the joy of sharing your love for ballet with the world. This community thrives on the power of creativity, collaboration, and passion. It’s an open invitation to connect with others who have the same enthusiasm for the grace and artistry of ballet! So don't be shy!
