Tutu Tuesday in Kugluktuk, Nunavut: A Tutu Tale From The Arctic #tututuesday

Hey everyone, it's your girl, Olivia, here from the frozen tundra! Today's Tutu Tuesday takes us to Kugluktuk, Nunavut, a small town in the heart of Canada's Arctic, known for its stunning natural beauty, frosty landscapes and… ballet?!

Believe it or not, dance is alive and well in Kugluktuk! I’m here to tell you that tutu magic knows no boundaries, not even the biting winds of the Arctic. Just like you, Canadians from coast to coast, Kugluktuk's community, embrace their love for the art of ballet. In this special episode of "Tutu Travels", we'll explore the world of tutus in this remarkable corner of Canada.

From the graceful curves of the Romantic tutu with its multiple layers and delicate wispy fabrics, to the more streamlined and fitted tutu of the modern era, these tutus inspire and move us! Here, I had the privilege to interview local dancer, Kiana. Her words are full of a passion that rivals the Arctic light!

"Dance isn't just a hobby for me; it's an escape," shared Kiana, with eyes shining with joy and a genuine, warm laugh that radiated a spirit as bright as the Arctic aurora borealis. “Dance lets me express myself with freedom I’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else! My dream is to create a dance studio right here in Kugluktuk for our youth and show them they too can chase big dreams.”

Her passion echoed the sentiments I found throughout the community. Even with a unique blend of arctic culture and Western dance styles and a distinct absence of dedicated ballet studios in town, the community embraces dance wholeheartedly. Their passion was visible in every conversation I had. Each shared story brought a new appreciation for the sheer strength and resilience of these wonderful people and the unwavering belief in the transformative power of the art form.

It was at Kugluktuk’s vibrant community center, that I witnessed a ballet class like no other. The room was buzzing with a delightful mix of ages and backgrounds united in a shared love for ballet. You could sense a powerful connection as these dancers, dressed in classic tutu designs and their very own creative combinations of clothing, took center stage. It was a joyful, vibrant celebration of movement, music, and shared joy.

As a professional ballerina myself, this day taught me an incredibly valuable lesson! In a place far removed from the bustling studios and stages of large Canadian cities, the love of dance was evident. Ballet in the heart of the Arctic brought a new perspective.

Here are some of my favorite moments from my "Tutu Tuesday in Kugluktuk":

  • I fell in love with the handmade, personalized tutus. Using bright, bold, traditional colours and motifs of the Inuit community and blending these seamlessly with the timeless appeal of tutu design. A wonderful combination of tradition and artistry, I thought!
  • The enthusiasm in the eyes of the young children as they explored the fundamental movements of ballet made the freezing temperatures a small inconvenience (let’s be honest - they’re Canadians; they’re born to conquer the elements!).
  • And then there was the amazing "ballet performance in the snow!" A breathtaking sight – a beautiful fusion of tutu styles in bold colors against a white backdrop, accompanied by the mesmerizing sounds of Arctic drumming and singing – a truly Canadian spectacle!

And just in case you were thinking that Kugluktuk doesn't have any “fashion-forward” tutus! It has them all! My eyes almost popped out of their sockets at the beauty of the unique creations the local dancers wore – tutus featuring intricate beading and even some exquisite fur accents, inspired by traditional Inuit garments.

Kugluktuk has stolen a piece of my heart and reminded me of the incredible potential that exists in every community! I believe every town and every village, no matter how far from big cities, deserves to experience the magic of dance! Let’s get the conversation going – tell us about your community and the role of ballet in your lives in the comments below. Until next time, don’t forget to live out your dance dreams and embrace the spirit of Tutu Tuesday!”
