Tutu Tuesday in Burlington, Ontario: A Celebration of the Pointe Shoe & All Things Tutu

Hey there, fellow dance enthusiasts! It's your girl, Chloe, back with another installment of my musings on the world of ballet โ€“ and this week, we're talking all things tutu. Yes, you read that right, it's Tutu Tuesday!

For those of you who don't know, Tutu Tuesday is a celebration of the iconic garment that defines ballet. It's a chance to showcase the different styles, the historical significance, and the sheer artistry of this mesmerizing piece of clothing. It's also a time to express our love for all things ballet โ€“ from the elegance of a classic Romantic tutu to the modern edge of a contemporary piece.

Growing up in Burlington, Ontario, I was always drawn to the beauty of ballet. The grace and athleticism, the discipline and artistry โ€“ it was something I yearned to be a part of. I vividly remember my first experience with a tutu โ€“ a frilly, pale pink creation that made me feel like a true princess. From that day on, I knew that ballet was my calling.

I can still remember my first "real" tutu. It was a simple white cotton one that I used in my early dance classes. It wasn't fancy, but it was special. I treated it with reverence, knowing it represented a journey I was just beginning. As I progressed, my tutus evolved too. They went from simple cotton to luxurious tulle, and from classic styles to more contemporary designs. Every tutu told a story, not just of my progress as a dancer, but also of the changing face of ballet in Canada.

I find that the love for the tutu extends beyond the dance studio. In recent years, Tutu Tuesday has become a social media phenomenon. Every Tuesday, dance enthusiasts around the globe use the hashtag #tututuesday to share their favourite tutu moments, photos of themselves in their pointe shoes and tutus, and inspirational quotes about the power of ballet. It's truly heartwarming to see the global ballet community coming together to celebrate our shared passion.

So, for all you tutu lovers out there, I want to take this opportunity to explore the evolution and beauty of these iconic garments. We're going to dive into the different types of tutus, their history, and how they are interpreted by dancers today. Here are just a few examples to consider:

  • The Romantic tutu: Think swirling, graceful, layers of tulle that skim the floor. This style is often associated with the 19th century romantic era in ballet and evokes images of whimsical fairies and ethereal ballerinas. Itโ€™s characterized by its flowing, light and airy appearance. These tutus allow for fluid movements and are often seen in classical ballets like Swan Lake and Giselle.
  • The Classical tutu: A more structured and shorter style, often with more layers than the Romantic tutu. It features a wider and fuller skirt that is often decorated with sequins and embellishments. The classical tutu, also known as a "waisted" tutu, is traditionally seen in ballets like The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty, as it provides a striking contrast with the male dancersโ€™ costumes and allows for more intricate steps.
  • The Contemporary tutu: Moving away from the traditional shapes of the past, the contemporary tutu embraces more abstract and innovative designs. Some examples may include tutus made of innovative materials, or the utilization of asymmetric or deconstructed shapes. These contemporary styles can be seen in modern ballets and offer a departure from the classical norm, while maintaining the fundamental artistry and elegance of the tutu.

It's not just the styles that make a tutu special. It's also the way that they're worn. A tutu is more than just a piece of clothing. It's an extension of the dancer's body, a tool that helps them to express themselves through movement. When you see a dancer in a tutu, you're not just seeing the dancer, you're seeing a story unfolding. You're seeing a character coming to life, a dream being realized. You're seeing the artistry of dance in all its glory.

I love celebrating #tututuesday every week. This celebration highlights the iconic garment of ballet that is also the vehicle for countless hours of joy and self-expression. Let's continue to spread the love for tutus, ballet, and the beauty of dance.

Keep dancing, keep inspiring, and keep those tutus twirling, Burlington, Ontario! #tututuesday #balletcanada
